More Kennedies

Just picked up $550 in halves today! I still have to go through most of them, but so far I've found:

Several BU '71-D's

2004-P

1966

XF/AU '79-D

About 12 BU 1995-P's... I'm thinking somebody broke a mint roll into a coin machine.

Edit

In the second half of the box...

1967 and 1969-D

2005-D This one threw me for a loop. There was a blob of gunk stuck on the last digit of the date, so I almost discarded it as another circulated '00 or '01. But curiosity got the best of me, and after scraping the goo off, I found a 5 hiding underneath it.

And an AU '88-D with very interesting bluish toning

Nice, Art. I read "$50 worth" and impressed by the large number of coins... and then I remember these are halves!

True, 50 dollars worth of halves is sort of a minimal search amount. So far I'm up to 250 dollars worth and only two worth keeping.

I did my math wrong when I posted that. Instead of 25 coins in $50, it's more like 100!

I've been through 350 dollars worth so far ---- 700 coins and have exchanged three out of my folders for better coins and found 1 that I needed. No silver. Nothing after 2001. No limited distribution coins. I'll go through some more during the week when I have a chance to get some rollers for them.

Now I've completed 500 dollars worth of halves with no silver and only 2 collection keepers - the 2001D and a 2006P. So I got the two halves I needed at face - not going to find them in change. I also upgraded about 4 other coins in my Kennedy folders. So let's call it 6 useful halves for face.

So I've finished the whole $2000 in Kennedy half dollars.

Pretty interesting. Two boxes had absolutely nothing that fell into the "keepers" catagory.

1994D GEM

2001D GEM

2001S Impaired proof – clad

2002P GEM

2004P GEM

2006P GEM

2006D GEM

2008P GEM

40% Silvers

1964 0

1965 2

1966 1

1967 6

1968 16

1969 2

1970 0

1976 1

Total 28

90% Silvers

1943P 1

1952P 1

1938P 1

Total 3

The 38,43 and 52 are all pretty rough. The 38 has been heavily polished. Most of the 40%'ers are dirty. A 65,66, and 67 are true BU Uncs.

I'm happy with the finds. I just wish I could get only one box at a time. It's a lot of money to lay out and that many half dollars is one heavy load of coins.

  • 4 weeks later...

I've been through another $250 in halfs this week and the only find worth mentioning is a 1990-S. Lots of scratches in the fields and the cameo has quite a few bad spots. But it's always nice to find a proof in "circulation".

PS -- I've spent about $50 worth of halfs in the past two days. This morning in Publix I paid with them and the cashier mentioned that she had just gotten forty dollars in dimes from another customer. People are still digging out the change.

So I've been through a whole box - $500.00 (that's 1000 coins). Here's the scoop.

1966 - 1

1882-S George Washington - 1

1996-S Proof PR62DCAM I'd say.

1990-S Proof PR60DCAM

1984-S Proof PR62DCAM

1995-P with copper exposed on obv. Looks like post mint damage but it's still interesting.

WOW, what great finds, Art. I challenge you to take pics of them for us. :)

I'm planning on it. Just have to get my self moving on it.

I have to agree, those are some pretty fantastic finds, Art!

My last box had a large number of very high-grade coins from the 90s-00s, but the lack of any appreciable amount of silver or proof coins has left me less than motivated to continue my searches anytime in the near future.

How do you define keeper?

Either something I need for my collection or a coin with a value higher than face, such as 40% silver, Mint set only years, 90% silver of course, and any really solidly struck 82 or 83.

That lot is finished and sent on its way. Total :

3 boxes = 0 keepers

1 box = 4 90%; 14 40%; 1 damaged proof; 2 1982D UNC; 1 2007 UNC

Overall a good hunt. I'll have to place another order. The first three boxes had obviously just been searched. The rolls were machine rolls but the ends of each had been cut open and just pushed back in place.

Roll searchers are really irritating sometimes. Most of the boxes I've been through have been thoroughly scoured by roll searchers, who are generally just looking for silver. I'd say that between 50-75% of all the half dollars I've ever come across have at least have their edges marked in sharpie. It's especially painful to find a coin that would've otherwise been a keeper except for the giant sharpie X across the face of the coin. They don't care whether it's a damaged '71-D or a GEM UNC 99-P; if it isn't silver, it's worthless to them.
