Portola Festival, San Francisco 1909

Bronze, 38mm

Holed version of the 1909 Portola Festival medal. 140 anniversary of the discovery of San Francisco Bay by the Portola Expedition led by Sgt. Jose Francisco de Ortega. The party was lost looking for Monterey and Monterey Bay. The festival was planned to celebrate the reconstruction of San Francisco following the 1906 earthquake. The medals are rare (R-6) today, but at least two dies were used to strike the medals, holed and unholded. Unhold versions are more valuable.

Another nice one Bill, does it say PAT APLD FOR by the sword-end?

Yes.

I would have loved to have found the same piece without the hole, but the last two I saw sold went for 10 times the price I paid for this one.
