Thanks, I compared to my 1894. When I first looked at it, I felt that the eagle had a very surprised look on his left face. Closer inspection made me think that the rim was too thin and disjointed from the rest of the coin. The edge looks nice. So I guess that it was created separately and then attached to the coin?

I would think that it is die struck and the edge lettering done separately. The

edge is not "attached," however, merely the result of being put into a device

that adds the edge lettering.

 

It is interesting to note that the edge denticles on the reverse are of differing

sizes, the mark of an incompetent forger.

What do you think of the tiny blob on top of Alexander’s head? Could that occur if the “coin” is die struck?
