bobh
Hard to imagine this as being genuine ... looks like the gold plating is wearing off: 1899 gold 10 roubles Even if it were genuine, who would want a coin like this?
Scottishmoney
Yes, but the cr@p is on the surface of the coin, like something was melted on it, or it went through a fire. Then it was cleaned, albeit unprofessionally. A while back LostDutchman purchased three very early USA silver dollars that were slabbed and went through a fire: Notice that even though the coin has been professionally conserved, that you can still see the unfortunate tell tale signs that the coin went through a fire. Good question, and I agree with your point, but some people buy cruddy looking coins (harshly cleaned, hairlined, gouged, etc.) all the time - but they're rare. To me, a cruddy coin is a cruddy coin, no matter how rare it is. When I look at a coin, I like to admire its beauty. Just goes again to prove that there is no accounting for taste, and all of us collect for different reasons.
