Crazy prices for common coins...

All of these are now over $300 -- why, I don't know, because in spite of the sellers descriptions, they are NOT "top grade":

:ninja:

1899 ten rouble gold coin

Another (terrible colors, looks like it was soaked in acid)

And this 1911 coin is already over $400. Although it is listed as scarce in most catalogs, it really is quite easy to find. And look at all the scratches it has:

1911 ten roubles

What's the matter, people? ;)

I find a similar situation on eBay India. People are bidding crazy amounts on coins that aren't worth so much. I have even seen huge bids for coins that are available much cheaper (in the same grade) as "Buy It Now" items.

Sometimes I think the whole world and his mother are just conspiring to outbid me :ninja:

1911 is the second most common date for the Nicholas II 10 roubles, after 1899.

Gold is hitting record high and everyone predicting it going only higher. Gold coins usually appreciate faster than gold. There is a high demand from investors and people, who just want to buy something tangible with their fast devalueting greenbacks. Increasing inflation, loses in stock market and rumors about US recession help the demand as well. So, I wouldn't be surprised if prices on older gold coins would increase another 20-30% this year.

Actually 1911 is not a common date of this type, with a mintage of 50000, it's more rare than all years of this type except 1909 and 1910.

Here is the list from more common to more rare for this type:

1899

1900

1903

1904

1901

1902

1898

1911

1909

1910

Most of 10 roubles in mintstate are from 1903, 1904 and 1911. It's hard to find any other years in mintstate for this type. Even with the whooping mintage of 27,600,000 for 1899 10 roubles, it's hard to find one in mintstate and they are more expensive than 1903, 1904, which are less common, but usually come in mintstate.

Unfortunately the above list relies on mint reports, which are virtually worthless because they are fiscal, not

calendar. About 4 years ago I ran a study of the 5 and 10 rouble coins for Nicholas II appearing on eBay. There

were 925 pieces in all, of which 189 were the 10 roubles. The most common was the 1899 with 100 pieces

and 1911 came in second with 26 coins. The next were 1900 at 16 and 1901 at 12. The mintmasters, however,

were normally not mentioned on the eBay offerings. These results were published in RNS Newsletter 15 (spring

2005).

It is believed that the Soviets restruck the 1911 10 roubles in the late 1920s, accounting for the disparity.

For the 5 roubles the most common date was 1898 at 197 pieces, followed by 1902 with 162.

It is also worth noting that, even when calendar year figures for gold or silver are known with certainty, they cannot

be counted on to determine rarity.

According to NGC report 1903 and 1904 are the most common with 889 graded for 1903 and 754 for 1904, this is compare to 54 for 1911. 1899 is pretty rare in mintstate and that explains low number for that year.

There are fakes of 1911 being sold on Ebay and they probably just go around from one unfortunate buyer to another.

What percentage of Imperial Russian Coins have been slabbed? 5%? 1%? Less?

How many of those slabbed coins have been cracked out and resubmitted one or more times in hope of getting a higher grade (and therefore more money) from buyers impressed by what some slabber says?

Take those pop reports with a grain of salt. The numbers reported might not be as solid as you think.

There seem to be fakes of nearly everything sold on ebay, not just 1911 Imperials. I feel sorry for the dealers who will one day be angrily denounced as "crooks" when they tell the buyers (now wanting to sell their collections) the ugly truth about the "treasures" they obtained on ebay.

Yes 1903/04 is most dates that graded a lot by ngc, but still I think they will increase the price in the future. I heard in Russia 1903/04 more valuable than 1911, but even IF 1911 was mited in soviet time for example 1-2 millions, (since no prove about it exist) its still seldom you can find in high grades and many fakes around with Nicholas II head like my neighbour's head :ninja:
