Help identifying coin

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I'm a newbie collector and I just joined this wonderful forum, so I'd like to know if you could help me out identifying this coin. I haven't been able to find it in World Coins...

I'm not even sure it's a coin, but it certainly looks Chinese.

Its diameter is 36.5 mm.

Thanks in advance :ninja:.

My guess is that it is an 18th - 19th century charm or good luck piece. These are fairly common, and are distinguishable from real coins by having figures other than Chinese characters on one side. Chinese cash coins always had Chinese characters on them and almost never had designs like people etc. But even some charms have characters on both sides with no figures, I have a large one from ca. 1850 that states in Mandarin that it is to bring fortune to the bearer, and it apparently works, but I believe it can only occasionally be used for that purpose:)
