Coin Grading Servces

I want to get some of my gold, palladium and platinum coins slabbed and graded. Actually mostly slabbed...

Are PCGS, NGC and ANACS still the best? What do they charge for world coins? I know ANACS is about $18. PCGS is only via a dealer and their collectors club and what about NGC?

Thanks!

Rusty.

You can do NGC via:

1) Collector's Society (direct)

2) Dealer

3) EBay (direct)

Check http://www.ngccoin.com/services/services.asp for prices

I prefer to store coins in slabs. There's a slim chance that I would take a Proof coin and fondle it.

How much are submissions for a world coin to PCGS if you are in their silver level collectors club?

I personally don't like the NGC slab and would rather go with PCGS or ANACS although I have not handled their new slab yet, just the old ones.

Thanks!

You can actually get a fair amount of them in slabs. If they are modern Russian commemorative coins, I don't see why you would want to slab them. Most of the time PCGS would just slap it a PF68 - rarely seen a PF70.

How's ANACS on grading world coins? Same as PCGS with PF68's?

I want to have all my coins in one slab type if possible.

Thanks!

I don't believe there is much prenium over the slabs. This have not affected the modern Russian commemorative coins unlike the crazy fads going on with US coins, although I do notice people paying a fair bit more for the original packaging if you can find one, that is.

I know that well as I collect them in original packaging as well as I face mad competition. :ninja:

My question is on grading practices.

Is ANACS better or worse than PCGS or NGC on world coins?

How do collectors rate the grading? I don't care about the price of coins slabbed in X company's slabs.

Thanks!

Rusty

I only have 1 slabbed coin. It came that way when I bought it and I have never cracked it out for fear of damaging it by accident.

I have no opinion regarding grading companies, having never bothered with them. I see no value in having coins slabbed, unless one is concerned about authenticity or has plans to sell in the near future.

Paying for grading today for a coin you intend to keep for more than a few years is a waste of money, in my opinion. You can be sure that in 10 years from now, grading "standards" will have changed yet again and you'll just have to pay to have them graded all over again when you go to sell.

Maybe other Russian specialists will disagree with me. :ninja:

Many on this forum are numismatists who are rather scornful of slabbing.

But I have been where you are. I really am in this for reasons of history and want safe storage and the best guarantee of authenticity possible for me.

I've mentioned here my old story of my superb supplier of Russian platinum three ruble coins, in business for 40 years and in the third generation of family ownership.

When approached about buying another coin, he told me to not buy a thing unless slabbed. He said to have any dealer you buy from slab the coin prior to sale - which is what I now do.

He said to go NGC because it is faster - and it is still pretty slow to me. So I sent in my four very nice platinum purchases from him earlier, and NGC rejected all - saying they could not certify authenticity. After having had the coins for some time, the dealer took them back, but so much for what should have been very substantial appreciation. Amusing long after the fact.

After tha experience and other bad times with Russian fakes and coins that could not be slabbed, I slashed and burned my collection. Everything is NGC slabbed, except for one PCGS. A very small collection.

A very big plus for NGC: It has an affiliate that conserves coins. Any time I will submit a coin in the future, it will be through this service first, in case NGC will not slab the coin for some reason, such as for cleaning or dings or whatever. You have a coin conserved and determined to be authentic and in a slab, but labeled with whatever the problem is or just labeled as being authentic. This is low cost and relatively fast, if you only do the conservation.

However, I do not care for the process of slabbing and will drop my membership in the collector's society, since the website is not good, the newsletter silly, and the slabbing process unpleasant.

From what I hear, PCGS-graded coins command the highest price, with NGC second. ANACS cost lots less and is very fast. One ANACS coin of mine was reslabbed by NGC at a lower grade. I understand PCGS is the slowest.

I will now only buy coins slabbed by PCGS or NGC, which have slabs of the same size. For your needs, I might just go with ANACS.

Good luck!

Ok. Firstly, I don't believe I have seen any ANACS slabs with modern Russian coins or perhaps not many.

Most of the slabs that I have seen so far with modern Russian coins are actually not PCGS but NGC. Grade wise, usually PF68,69, only seen three slabs with PF70 out of some 100+ that I have seen, all of the gold coins, hopefully if I remember right but don't take my word for it. Would be the best if you can access their database and check it up.

Here is an example currently in Yahoo Japan auctions:
