Mark Stilson
I was at my local coin dealer the other day and saw a coin, He had it listed as a 1854 Japanese one sen. From the book I have this style was only minted 1873 to 1877 with square scales on the dragon and 1880 to 1892 with v-shaped scales on the body. Can anyone confirm this? My coin same style 1873 1880 2 sen
gxseries
1854? But that isn't even Meiji era if I am not mistaken. I'm not too sure if there were such coins then.

gxseries
I am guessing that he messed the years up or he couldn't read them properly.
Mark Stilson
Not going to say what price he wants for it till I double check. (about a fine to extra fine) My memory may be off.
Mark Stilson
Okay, he made a little slip. 1884 one sen. But he is trying to sell it for $325 and its about the same shape as my 2 sen. From my book that was the highest mintage of all the years. He did say he does not really keep up with foreign coins. Also wondering can anybody confirm the dates on the coins I have?
Blackhawk
Your 1 sen looks like a 1874 (yr. 7) to me...the two sen is a 1880. I don't know why he's be asking so much for the 1884 sen, it lists in my Krause at $2.00 in VF, which may or may not be an indication of actual value but should give you some kind of idea. I would guess at any rate that his price for the coin should be $5.00 or less.
Mark Stilson
What do you look at to tell the year? (Figure if I've got some might as well learn something about them. )
