Suggestion for new coin forum: --

What do you think?

Over in the "Russian Coin Forum" on this site, we have had (and still have) several threads dealing with fake coins and auctions in which fakes are/were being sold. For whatever reason, this is a big problem with Russian coins, especially on eBay. There are some sellers who sell almost nothing but fakes there.

If we had a separate forum for fake alerts, it would be easier to find them for different types of coins. Many or maybe most collectors collect more than one specific area -- I concentrate on many U.S. American coins as well as Russian coins, for example. When someone encounters an auction selling a fake, an alert with a link to the auction (if available) could be posted in the new "Fake Coin Alert" forum, and a link to THAT posting in the appropriate specialized forum. Or it could happen the other way around ... whatever is most convenient.

Would this be feasible for the Admin of this site, and is this something desirable? Maybe we should take a vote?

The problem with fake coin sites is the person who makes the suggestion. There are forums dealing with ancient fakes completely useless because the forum is controlled by people who make unfounded and unsubstantiated accusations. In these matters one expert is worth one thousand screaming voices. If you could do a forum with a couple of expert moderators it might work.

I am not familiar with the forums you mention because I don't collect ancients. However, people on this forum always seem eager to substantiate the claims they make. At least the people posting in the Russian Coin Forum are always ready with reference material and images.

I can't imagine anyone "controlling" or censoring what is written here except in cases where legal issues are concerned. Clearly, libel or blacklisting of individual sellers should not be tolerated.

To me, the selling of counterfeits, particularly over the internet, is getting worse every day, and it would be a help -- particularly because images of fakes can be posted here, and they can be studied and compared to images of genuine coins. It would be very educational. As you say, some moderation would be necessary, but I think it is already in place -- there was already one incident recently on the Russian forum where messages which had been already posted were modified by the Admins. Everyone involved seemed to understand the issues at hand, and all were quite civilized in their responses (as they usually are :ninja: ).

Agree with most of the points here.

There was a case of a seller using genuine photos, except that they weren't happened to be his / her, and the owner of the real coins managed to make a post on here and prevented a major diaster to occur. Embrassingly, I was close in putting a serious bid on one of the coins. :ninja:

What I personally would love to see is that, although we as a forum might not be powerful enough, is that ebay have a forum of people monitoring such counterfeits. Come on, ebay does monitor for unusual items, frauds and such, but to take in extra specialists from their specialized fields? Even novice at many times can tell the difference between counterfeits and genuine.

But putting that aside since that's not going to come anytime soon, I would rather suggest, "questionable and counterfeit forum", where people can question the coins whether it's fake or genuine, and if it's deemed to be counterfeited, it will remain as a post.

Although specialized fields can provide a very detailed answer, I personally would find a list of counterfeited worldwide coins to be VERY useful, and eventually if there is enough data collected, there can be a useful statistics to determine what particular type of coins are highly at risk in getting a counterfeit.

Ditto, what Scottishmoney said. Ther have been lawsuites around against people who have said different dealers name. Not only the person posting it may get sued but also the forum admins. may get named in one.

Question: by asking a particular coin "questionable authenticity" might lead a lawsuit to occur?

I.e. this coin might be counterfeit, after comparing various sources.

Uh, yes it might. There are a few of us here on this very forum that know well.
