  1. Note: All three entries in this group are Art's, so we're just going to go straight to a three-way group final among them. Ugly Coin Competition 2014 Ugly By Nature Victims of Circumstance 1970 and Before Art's 1848 US Large Cent A combination of pre-strike planchet damage and minor corrosion that was post-mint damage. Overall it's a beautiful coin (my opinion) but a fine example of both types of damage on a single surface. vs Art's 1840 US Large Cent The blue background color that you can see at the edges of this coin is accurate. Coin is discolored and has many surface scratches and is quite porous probably from being buried in the ground for a considerable period of time. vs Art's 1858 Flying Eagle Cent, small letters The coin has suffered corrosion. The corrosion is evenly distributed on the surface and effects both the obverse and reverse. I believe the coin must have been buried in the soil for an extended period of time with all surfaces coming into contact with evenly moist soil and no major obstructions. Overall a very nice example of this beautiful series. This coin is graded by ANACS as EF net VF20. I agree with the grading.
  2. Ugly Coin Competition 2014 Ugly By Nature Aging Like Mayonnaise 1971 and After ScottO's 1986 San Marino 500 Lira Not even that much wear on the coin, however the coin has very little design, and the obverse design, the detail for the most part is nearly gone. vs ScottO's 1976 Norway 1 Krone Age hasn't been good to poor Olav making him completely bald, the reverse design is rather bland, however due to heavy circulation the coin is heavily scratched
  3. Ugly Coin Competition 2014 Ugly By Nature Aging Like Mayonnaise 1971 and After ScottO's 1992 Mexico 1 Peso Possibly a slightly weak strike on the obverse has led to the wear of this coin almost completely rubbing out the obverse design. vs ScottO's 1989 Isle of Man £1 Age is never kind on the Pound Coin, especially here where there are deep scratches all over the obverse from circulation.
  4. Ugly Coin Competition 2014 Ugly By Nature Aging Like Mayonnaise 1971 and After Art's 2006 Belgium 2 Euro Commemorative While this is an attractive and interesting design on paper and on truly uncirculated coins, a small amount of circulation renders the design flat and unattractive. I have yet to find a strongly struck version of this coin but definitely would like to. vs ScottO's 1974 Morocco 20 santimat Age has almost worn the obverse portrait to nothing more then a shape, with only the deeper lines of the facial features and the ears showing, and the legend on the obverse almost worn away, the reverse design also, all details on the raised parts of the coat of arms are flat.
  5. Ugly Coin Competition 2014 Ugly By Nature Aging Like Mayonnaise 1970 and Before ScottO's ca. 1272 Edward I Bristol Penny What would have been a fairly nice coin, full planchet, nice details, has become badly buckled. vs ikaros' 1946 UK Brass 3d Short of being run over by a train, just about everything that could happen to a coin has happened to this poor thing. Heavy wear, corrosion, paint, what looks like burn marks, a gouge across the thrift plant on the obverse, and some indeterminate gunk.
  6. Ugly Coin Competition 2014 Ugly By Nature Aging Like Mayonnaise 1970 and Before geordie582's ca. 150 BCE Celtic poitin Either was run over by a plough or the minter had a bad day! vs ScottO's 1750 Denga Another great design where age has got the better of it.
  7. Ugly Coin Competition 2014 Ugly By Nature Aging Like Mayonnaise 1970 and Before ikaros' 1749 UK Halfpenny Poor George's portrait wasn't all that flattering in the first place; two hundred and fifty years of hard use haven't done him any favors. vs ScottO's 1917 Maundy 2d An average design coin, that was once mounted leaving an ugly raised line all along the obverse.
  8. Ugly Coin Competition 2014 Ugly By Nature Aging Like Mayonnaise 1970 and Before ikaros' 1901 UK Penny The final portrait of Victoria is one of my favorite designs; you know you're looking at the coin of an empire. That said, enough time in a pocket will reduce about any design to a nearly featureless blob. It wouldn't take much more wear to reduce this one to an undated type coin. vs ScottO's 1635 Double Tournois Showing signs of a long time under ground, design looks faded. A slight bend and lots of green.
  9. Ugly Coin Competition 2014 Ugly By Nature Aging Like Mayonnaise 1970 and Before Art's 1878 UK 3d Obverse is worn to the point that the portrait shows almost no details. While not an ugly coin per se, it does fit this category nicely. vs thedeadpoint's 1941 US Half Dollar Until recently, my oldest proof. The first "big" coin I added to my collection about half a lifetime ago when I was a youngster. Why is it in this contest? Hard to see in this pic but that eagle has some unsightly toning in an area "where the sun don't shine."
  10. Ugly Coin Competition 2014 Ugly By Nature Aging Like Mayonnaise 1970 and Before Art's 1794 US Large Cent Very heavy usage damage and corrosion. Coin is graded as good but net FR2 because of damage. A great example of an early and well used Large Cent vs ikaros' 1853 US quarter, arrows & rays Not only is nearly all the detail wiped from this coin, the reeding is all worn flat.
  11. Ugly Coin Competition 2014 Ugly By Nature Aging Like Mayonnaise 1970 and Before Art's 1825 US Half Dollar While these are beautiful coins in conditions that maintain a fair amount of detail in the bust, once the wear passes a certain level they start to appear very blob like. This is of course my opinion and is not meant to disrespect this wonderful coin or the many folks who collect and treasure Bust Halfs. vs ikaros' 1916 UK Penny Not only worn, this poor penny seems to have caught the Andromeda Strain too, or maybe some sort of metal ebola.
  12. Ugly Coin Competition 2014 Ugly By Nature Aging Like Mayonnaise 1970 and Before Art's 1925 USA Lexington and Concord Commemorative Half Extreme pocket wear. It's unusual to find a commemorative half dollar with this much wear. While many coins entered circulation most were recaptured way before they reached this level. I'm guessing this was a pocket piece for many many years. vs ScottO's 1690 Tin Farthing A rare coin, made out of a material that does not survive the tests of time very well, huge chunks missing, and very few details remain.
  13. It's that weird schedule of mine -- when everyone else has a weekend, I have to work.
  14. Just so no one thinks I've forgotten (it's been kinda extremely hectic at work these last couple days). I have the brackets made up and will post them tonight when I get home from work; I don't have time to do them this morning before I have to turn in. It is after 5am, yaknow.
  15. It actually looks a little better in hand; the fields aren't quite so foggy as the scan suggests. Of course, I wouldn't dream of compounding its problems by handling it further.
  16. Dunno. They came out of different but adjoining machines in the break room at work, so they could have been put in by the company, or they could have both come from the same co-worker, and there's really no way of knowing -- I'd like to know how long they've been circulating before I got my hands on them and put them in my Shelter for Wayward Metal Disks... I just can't imagine a thief thinking, "Oh, these specially sealed really fancy looking coins, they must only be worth face value." I can only assume Junior got into mom's or dad's or elder sibling's collection and had a spree like my uncle did to my dad in the mid-1950s, when he did in fact put an '09S-VDB (among others) in a gumball machine... Anyway, the coin...
  17. Figured I ought to put my money where my mouth is, so to speak, relative to my comment on the gold coin thread. I've started a petition on petitions.whitehouse.gov to that precise end, thusly: The direct link to it is here, and I invite you to sign. Or not, if you don't agree.
  18. I would support this if it was a petition to redesign the whole lot from the penny on up, and not just bullion.
  19. Just got another proof in change. Scan when I get home tonight. This one is a North Dakota SHQ. CuNi rather than Ag unfortunately. Two in just over a week, that's weird.
  20. All nomination threads are now closed; I shall now repair to my lair to set up the brackets, and will have them up soon(ish). Thanks to everyone who's entered!
