  1. Yes, I also wonder how the dies made it out of the mint. The control at the SPB mint is pretty strict. Recently an obverse die of a very rare Alexander I medal by Leberecht was sold in Europe for a song.
  2. Not sure if you noticed - Stacks New York auction had a few dies of the early Soviet coins. I think one sold for ~$16,000
  3. I agree. I was also buying Renaissance coins from dealers after the auction, because they were such great coins!.
  4. Here is one more nice overstrike. An for those who read Russian, here is a link to a discussion on the 1745 overstrike I posted here: http://staraya-moneta.ru/forum/messages/forum2/topic90335/message848923/#message848923
  5. I made a mistake back in 2000. There was a matching 10 rouble gold coin there with similar effect. They would look nice next to each other
  6. Thanks! Yes, got it for $900. You like copper overstrikes and I like them in silver. Here is a nice one that might get you into roubles .
  7. I think I did, but do not have PRs yet.
  8. I am guessing you are talking about paper money, right? Hard to evaluate without pictures. Try hitting "More Reply Options" next to "Post". It will give you an option to attach a file.
  9. Latest World Wide Coins of California auction had a late overstrike of Elizabeth on Ivan - 1745. It used to be a great rarity, but seems a few came to light in the past few years. Still, the other ones have a 5 that looks like a 3 (or vice versa). With this coin it is a clear 5.
  10. Rare coin! The color seems to be darker than in the catalog, right?
  11. Based on the rouble to swiss franc rate it actually makes sense - about the same price in roubles in 2013 and now.
  12. It will probably be Sincona Collection 2 Part 2.
  13. There is no easy way. As a favor, someone in Moscow will get it for me and bring it to US in January. The magazine will be available closer to the end of November.
  14. Congrats! Which picture shows more natural color?
  15. E.F. seems overgraded, More like V.F., at best
  16. Congrats to Alex. You did better than me, and did not even have to fly to the auction. As I mentioned before, I bought 1 coin - lot 246 - 1758 Ivanov rouble with pearls below crown. Or is it Ivanov's? Interesting discussion on the Russian forum: http://staraya-moneta.ru/forum/messages/forum2/topic86553/message805203/#message805203
  17. I bought one coin, just to remember the auction by. Nothing big, from the bottom of my list, but still plugged a hole. Now we are enjoying Florence, which more tban makes up for not getting some coins.
  18. bobh, interesting observation. Other authors of the late were accused of similar practices. I recall something even more involved. When Bitkin was translating Zander's book on Silver Roubles and Efimoks, he actually replaced the images with his own, often questionable ones.
  19. PRL links in the database section appear to be broken...
  20. Thanks. Here is one I was able to add to my collection this year. Not the best image. I will improve it one day. Again forgot how to add pictures directly. http://omnicoin.com/viewcoin/1033108
  21. It sounds vaguely familiar. I do not think it ever became RNS publication. But I do remember seeing one for auction somewhere. And speaking of that I decided to look at the auction catalog of the Zander Library. Yes, it is there as lot 1077: (Michailovitch, Geand Duke George) English translation by Anders Berglund of the text of Volume II, Peter I 1682-1710, 93 pages, and constructed English text for 1711-1719 plates, 99 pages. Card Covers Estimate was $50, sold for $110 Do not know how many copies were produced. I do not think I've seen one offered since.
  22. BTW, this portrait is quite common for a Sun Rouble. A minute detail that moves it from R to R2 would not make much difference for most collectors - still a common portrait. Lately I like the big Conros catalog. In addition to a classic rarity rating there is also a popularity amongst collectors index. I think it is quite useful.
  23. Whoever sent this coin to NGC knew that it will not get a number grade. So on one hand it is a pre-planned action to cover the damage. On the other hand the writing on the slab could have been related to some kind of damage instead of hairlines, which would defeat the purpose. Also, I guess there is a cost of slabbing to consider with the return.
  24. You referring to Diakov 2000. In 2012 a new catalog on the gold and silver coins of Peter the Great was published. There are many more different varieties there and an attempt to cover all the die varieties. I do not think Bitkin had the same goal. There are rumors that Bitkin is working on a new cataog. So we shall see...
