My first overstruck coin was 1763 EM 5K. bought maybe 20 yrs ago...

It was in with a mail order lot of coins, bought sight unseen for very little, and badly corroded.

I had great fun removing the verdigris, only to discover all those strange extra elements that just didnt belong on this big russian coin! Thus i discovered the fun of overstruck variety.

 

An impressive coin, Josh! It is the large EM variant, valued higher than mine.

Hi Altyn, Юсупов catalog lists "Буквы ЕМ крупные" showing a picture corresponding to your and Squirrel's coins, valued $8 in F-VF

and "Буквы ЕМ мелкие" (no picture, probably like my coin) valued $6 in F-VF.

Hi Altyn, good to know I'm not alone . According to 1763EM mint statistics, there were 32 654 400 pcs struck on new flans and 3 870 700 pcs overstruck on the earlier 10 kopek. Roughly speaking only abt. every tenth of the 1763EM 5kopek is an overstrike. Your overstrike is the large EM variant. With mine being the small EM variant we see that at least 2 different dies were used for overstriking. Thank you for making me see that!

Since people who have studied my own coins know that I already own two 7-1/2 rouble gold coins, it might be asked: "Why another one?" This one is the wide-rim variety which, AFAIK, has only been documented in the Kazakov catalog which is surely hard to get these days, having had only 1,000 copies printed and not yet reprinted -- anyway, I didn't have one yet, but wanted to have this variety.

Seen alone the coin looks nice and old, it's pretty deceptive. I would have fallen for it, too.

As said, there should be no problem returning it.

But -- before sending it back please show us the edge of the coin, too. Sometimes a too perfect looking edge gives a fake away.

I compared only the loop under the monogram and could not find any picture of a 1771KM polushka corresponding to your upper picture

IMHO, Sigi, you have the older, plump, eagle. Not the scrawny, underfed bird of the later vintage. Congratulations!

after, pls note, after ebay auction i consulted with expert from russia and he said that i should have gone much higher hunting for this coin, especially that it is yellow not red

Thank you Valentin, I'm always looking forward to what you have to say! Your opinion is greatly appreciated! This time it wiped out my last doubts about the eagle.

But let me ask you - isn't chocolate brown the ultimate color of an old copper coin? What is yellow?

The coin in question is light brown (judging from the ebay pictures - coin is still in the mails). Is it this light brown what you call yellow?

Why would it be preferable to dark (chocolate) brown?

And what is meant by "red"? Maybe a cleaned (piggy pink) coin?

It's definitely tricky!

 

When I saw the coin it was at $30 or so and I thought this is the old eagle. Then I looked at other coins, and became uncertain. There's some possibility of transitional eagles. Like eagle with one old wing and one new wing or old wings re-engraved into the new shape. At any rate, the next day it was it at $40, and I decided to put a snipe at double that price. And boy was I surprised when I saw how that auction ended.

 

P.S. The fact that there were at least 3 snipes above $100 is a convincing argument. While I was not certain enough to commit any significant amount. You were clearly not the only person who felt inclined to do so. This definitely sways my opinion towards the old eagle. I'll save the images for future reference.

Alex, I was unsure, too, viewed and compared for days. As you say there are transitional eagles close to the old eagle, such as on the current ebay coin.

Please do! Actually, the funny thing is that I used your collection on Omnicoin to compare.

 

So I was looking at this coin of yours that you told me was not the 1763-1768 type eagle:

Man, this is tricky. The difference is minute. I only think to have found the very rare old eagle. See my comparison below of what I bought at ~ $700 (still in the mails) and what actually can be had at eBay at a starting price of $1 (eBay link below picture). Did I waste my money? Let's wait till I have the coin in hand. There were my underbidders who drove the price up, wanting the coin. Note that I was the latest bidder (sniper). Nobody could shill. And last but not least there is one-kuna, an outstanding expert, who also thinks it to be the rare coin.

When you are looking at the 2 coins side by side keep in mind that the scale on these photos is not 1:1.

Yes, I had wanted to point out that the eBay coin is much closer to the very rare coin (G&M-Bakken) than to the common coin (mine). With other words, the ebay coin was in fact the very rare variant.

IMHO the crown here is definitely smaller than on the 1803 style series, and note that the tips of the wings do not overlap the counting circles.

 

I was hoping this coin would end up in my collection, but the final price put my bid to shame. Lately, I feel that eBay is becoming more of a spectator sport for me.

I inspected the picture closely, too. IMHO it is not quite the rare later eagle (Bitkin295) but rather a variant of the common eagle (Bitkin 294) or something inbetween. The eagle's tail looks like that of the later eagle, but the crown seems to be of the larger size of the 1803 type. I would greatly appreciate other peoples' opinions on this.

While discussing the recent Künker sale the Polushka 1800/799 was considered an overdate every time the coin turns up. Here´s the only other counterpart that I know of where 3 digits have been altered. This to my knowledge is a rare variety.

The inscription is in English - dated 1 December 1899. I can't quite make out the name:

The inscription reads

1.December 1899

Prenzlau sounds pretty German. There is a town near Berlin by that name and Prenzlau exists also as a German surname. December was the German spelling in 1899 (it since has become Dezember). The dot following the 1 is the German way to write the date.

The item is located in Lithuania.

Many Germans (or their descendants) then lived in Russia and especially in the Baltic region of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania which then belonged to Russia. Russian coins circulated there. And that explains IMHO a German graffito on a tsarist rouble. Sigi
