  1. Siberian 10 kopeeks 1767 with lettered edge just sold for over 2000 euro!

Very surprising considering how murky the photos are. Coin might be corroded.

Yes, it might be corroded (but evenly). The monogram side crown is unusually sharp. The value side is from exactly the same defective die as the Bakken coin, sold in Munich abt. 2 years ago at EURO 1600 plus gravy. I have no doubt about genuineness.

As it is the only one of the Siberian 10 kop. still missing with me, I wanted it badly.

I was crazy enough to bid EURO 2020,07. But someone else went even higher. Who knows how much he bade - according to eBay's rules he got it it at just EURO 10 over my bid.

I don't know what to say. I still don't have the coin :(

but I saved that heap of money I don't really have aside to spend for a coin.

And maybe the coin is even uglier than on the poor pictures......

  2. sigi, those are fabulous images......just fabulous. What's the secret to getting them so close up and sharp? For the test images, I just used my digital camera hand held with what I thought was a lot of light, but as you can see if you looked at the thumbnails, they're really mediocre.

Thank you, Ron. My images are just 3 scans each, put together with photoshop.

    Regards, Sigi

  3. Not too sure if you like this or not:

I'm figuring this is where the underlayer is to be at.

Very interesting, Hisa! What do you think - could it be a re-overstrike? What about the other side?

    Thank you for your time.

I tried to remove the green stuff out of the edge's holes but without much success.

It would go away by cooking the coin in soda but the color would probably suffer.

  4. I can't see any traces of overstriking on the coin surfaces, and the edge should show more traces of the rope edge if there was a re-edging involved. But I'm certainly no expert on these things, although I have studied them to a certain degree.

Sigi, did you measure the diameter and thickness? If overstruck, it should be somewhat wider and flatter than a regular pyatak.

Bob, on my 1st picture there is an arrow pointing to what looks like a previous Д (from ДЕСЯТЬ).

The reoverstrikes are sometimes larger than the regular coins - and sometimes they aren't. There were quite some examples in the Bakken sale, compare the pictures.

  5. For 1796 AM 10 kopeeks the edge should be rope. If this is an overstrike of a 1796 10 kopeeks this coin should have at least some trace of over edging from the 1796 AM 10 kopeeks to the recoined "1796" AM 5 kopeeks with reticulated edge.

You are perfectly right - I only checked Wolmar and Conros catalogs where there is no mention of a rope edge variant for 5kop1796AM.

Logically a 10kop1796AM with its rope edge should leave at least traces of that edge when reoverstruck into a 5kop1796AM.

Thank you for widening my horizon! :art:

But sadly enough my coin doesn't reveal the slightest trace of a rope edge :sorry: It is just reticulated.

The 10kop1796 were not issued for circulation. So it is very unlikely that AM reoverstruck any reticulated edge 10kop1796 from another mint, but only their own rope edged 10kop1796AM.

This means that my coin is likely just a normal 5kop1796AM without more.

  6. I think I know what Sigi is trying to illustrate.

First obverse picture would be the letter "D" for "D"ECYaTB. This is more difficult than I expected. Sigi, can you please take it with a bit more light and have it on a angle?

Yes, it looks like a cyrillic D. As the coin was lacqered it is now bathing in acetone. Once stripped I'll make new pictures.

  7. That's not a fake eagle, it's Paul's re overstrike with the slightly changed design both sides. The EM looks indeed a bit like KM, but it is EM - there was no KM. Much depends on the angle from which the picture was taken. Nice coin by the way and I think the high price is justified

    Congrats to the winner.

  8. Alex, I think that's not a bump because the flan is perfectly circular at that area (not flattened as from a bump). The edge, however widens there. If you hold the coin in hand it looks pretty much as if the coin has been re-edged. Which however would not make much sense - why should it have been done? I'm sorry to still not have satisfactory pictures to show clearly what I mean, still trying

The relation of new planchets vs. overstrikes was abt. 10 to 1 according to catalogs (Diakov, Wolmar). Pictures are not always clear enough to detect an overstrike, BTW many of those coins are more or less corroded, possibly concealing minor details. It is true that a clear EM overstrike is not seen too often.
