  1. Alex, I think that's not a bump because the flan is perfectly circular at that area (not flattened as from a bump). The edge, however widens there. If you hold the coin in hand it looks pretty much as if the coin has been re-edged. Which however would not make much sense - why should it have been done? I'm sorry to still not have satisfactory pictures to show clearly what I mean, still trying The relation of new planchets vs. overstrikes was abt. 10 to 1 according to catalogs (Diakov, Wolmar). Pictures are not always clear enough to detect an overstrike, BTW many of those coins are more or less corroded, possibly concealing minor details. It is true that a clear EM overstrike is not seen too often. Sigi
  2. An impressive coin, Josh! It is the large EM variant, valued higher than mine. Regards, Sigi
  3. Hi Altyn, Юсупов catalog lists "Буквы ЕМ крупные" showing a picture corresponding to your and Squirrel's coins, valued $8 in F-VF and "Буквы ЕМ мелкие" (no picture, probably like my coin) valued $6 in F-VF. Sigi -
  4. Hi Altyn, good to know I'm not alone . According to 1763EM mint statistics, there were 32 654 400 pcs struck on new flans and 3 870 700 pcs overstruck on the earlier 10 kopek. Roughly speaking only abt. every tenth of the 1763EM 5kopek is an overstrike. Your overstrike is the large EM variant. With mine being the small EM variant we see that at least 2 different dies were used for overstriking. Thank you for making me see that! Regards, Sigi -
  5. I've got a new love affair !! . What looks like an edge bump at 3 o'clock on the eagle side is worth an extra posting, I will have to do better pictures first. Sigi
  6. Hi Bob, it's a pleasure reading your lively post - it's like sitting there myself. Waiting and waiting - then unexpectedly buying something along the road. Sometimes to a later regret. But your patience paid - congratulations!! As to the coin above, the 2012 WOLMAR catalog also lists the two rim variants as follows:- Узкий кант------- VF $700 / XF $850 Широкий кант----VF $770 / XF $970 Sigi
  7. The eagle shown is in fact a transitional eagle. But in my humble opinion it is less common than the final eagle shown below which continued for the following years. Sigi
  8. Yes - once again hoped nobody else would but let's be positive - I kept the money.
  9. Not too bad a catch, the coin is pretty scarce and in pleasant state. Congrats! Sigi -
  10. No, not yet, just one offer and 4 days to go. -
  11. Seen alone the coin looks nice and old, it's pretty deceptive. I would have fallen for it, too. As said, there should be no problem returning it. But -- before sending it back please show us the edge of the coin, too. Sometimes a too perfect looking edge gives a fake away. Thank you,Sigi
  12. Yes Alex, indeed, that works! http://www.m-dv.ru/catalog/ Thank you, Sigi -
  13. Jim Elmen has been in business for more than 30 years with an excellent reputation. I do not doubt that he would take the coin back. By the way: I could not paste the link of www.m-dv.ru/catalog/ How did you do this? Thank you, Sigi -
  14. I compared only the loop under the monogram and could not find any picture of a 1771KM polushka corresponding to your upper picture There are quite some 1771KM polushkas shown at: www.m-dv.ru/catalog/ all more or less like your 2nd picture. Sigi -
  15. Hi folks - very low resolution was necessary to get under the 100kb required to upload. Coin pictures (not the coins!!) needed to be brightened up to show clearly. I hope you can see what I mean. I assembled 4 matching pairs of eagles for 1778 and 1779 Are there more pairs? Is there a matching eagle of 1778 for my final 1779 eagle? Thank you, Sigi click on the little picture below to enlarge it
  16. Nice job, nearly convincing design, were there not the poor spacing of НА СЕРЕБРО and the fact that the manufacturer could not differentiate between А and Л (3x!). Sigi -
  17. I thought to be the only one to recognize it from the poor pictures But my sniper shot went way to short Congrats to the winner - Sigi -
  18. Josh, thank you for the witty comment. You always find a humourous aspect about this (sometimes too) serious business Best, Sigi
  19. Thank you Valentin, I'm always looking forward to what you have to say! Your opinion is greatly appreciated! This time it wiped out my last doubts about the eagle. But let me ask you - isn't chocolate brown the ultimate color of an old copper coin? What is yellow? The coin in question is light brown (judging from the ebay pictures - coin is still in the mails). Is it this light brown what you call yellow? Why would it be preferable to dark (chocolate) brown? And what is meant by "red"? Maybe a cleaned (piggy pink) coin? Thank you again, Sigi
  20. Alex, I was unsure, too, viewed and compared for days. As you say there are transitional eagles close to the old eagle, such as on the current ebay coin.
  21. Man, this is tricky. The difference is minute. I only think to have found the very rare old eagle. See my comparison below of what I bought at ~ $700 (still in the mails) and what actually can be had at eBay at a starting price of $1 (eBay link below picture). Did I waste my money? Let's wait till I have the coin in hand. There were my underbidders who drove the price up, wanting the coin. Note that I was the latest bidder (sniper). Nobody could shill. And last but not least there is one-kuna, an outstanding expert, who also thinks it to be the rare coin. More to follow - best, Sigi eBay coin still available: http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320698027455&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
  22. Thank you both! I don't quite like the rough edge, did not obtain a picture of it . Sigi -
  23. I hope so Will post more once it's here. Sigi -
  24. Yes, I had wanted to point out that the eBay coin is much closer to the very rare coin (G&M-Bakken) than to the common coin (mine). With other words, the ebay coin was in fact the very rare variant. Sigi -
  25. Alex, think you were right I should have taken a closer look. There was a similar one in the Bakken collection, auctioned by Gorny & Mosch. See pictures below. Sigi
