Daniel
Can anybody tell me who this person is, and point me to some references on the web? The Krause catalogue identifies her as "White Josefa." A Google search on that term results in only three pages of results, the majority of which are coin-related pages. That tells me something is wrong with Krause's identification. I also tried searching for "Ortiz de Dominquez" since Krause says the person who appears on KM#424 is " 'Josefa' Ortiz de Dominquez". I came up empty handed there, too. Any help is appreciated.
ccg
"White Josefa" refers to an early one-year issue of this coin which was in nickel.
SlavicScott
JOSEFA ORTIZ DE DOMINGUEZ, a hero of Mexican independence. The term "White Josefa" refers to the 1 year type which was in a "white" metal, as opposed to the copper/brass pieces before and afterwards. tbirde56
The coin is copper-nickel as opposed to the bronze that had previously been used. HER biography: Josefa Ortiz De Domínguez
Daniel
Thank you, everyone (particularly for the link to her biography). I guess this is another error in Krause (31st ed). All the brass issues say the reverse is "White Josefa". If that is the nickname for the coin, why would they refer to the person with that name? I don't think she was ever called "White Josefa" as a person? Thanks again.
