Kirkcaldy Penny

Recommended Posts

I came across this one via ebay. It was actually brought to my attention on rec.collecting.coins by a fellow Scot who laughingly made mention of the spelling of `Kirkcaldy' on the token. The spelling however is exactly the same as for the original. Indeed, this one is nigh on an exact match for the original `scarce as hen's teeth' token but...it is a replica. The only `original' I have ever seen in the flesh is in the museum at Kirkcaldy.

The interesting thing about this `replica' is that it was commissioned by the University of Chicago and (if the edge marking is anything to go by) issued to graduates of it's business school. A fitting graduation gift too!

The original `Kirkcaldy penny' was bronze. This one is bronze too but a lighter colour (suggesting less copper content). The colour is about the only difference discernable, making it (for me) an excellent gap filler..... until the real McCoy turns up (if ever).
