It has happened several spectacular bank robberies in Sweden this year. For example heavy trucks has been used to smash through defenses. Then several men with mashine guns has threatened the security guards to hand over a lot of cash. To get away safely, acomplices has burned up several cars on the highway, phoned in fake bomb threats, and thrown caltrops on the roads.

Because of that there has been a lot of talk about security and how money should be handled. For some days, almost no ATMs were refilled with money, leading to about 60% of the mashines in the big cities beeing empty after three days.

Today, the Swedish financial inspection, has come out with the recomendation to abolish the 1000kr banknotes in a short time and in the future also take away the 500kr and 100kr banknotes. They have also suggested to have a fee on using ATMs. This, for making people use cards instead of cash, and make money handling safer.

In the same time the Swedish central bank has given ok. for emitting a new world leading security enhanced 1000kr banknote, containing a secret device never used in banknotes before, and also new 50kr banknote.

It will be very interesting to see how this will end.

My father and uncle were on the E4 driving towards Stockholm when this happened. They were about 50-100 meters from the burning car. The police were not allowing anyone into the city on the major highways so my father ended up missing the ferry to Finland.
