jlueke
One the Napoleanic piece in the competition right now http://coinpeople.com/index.php?showtopic=4916. Is there a back story to that type of eagle? Or did they just copy a random ancient design? It looks Phonecian.
bobbycoin
If I am not mistaken it is a Rooster or Cock as some say to represent France? But it does look more like an eagle doesnt it? I guess I just assumed. Cool Story about The French Cock against The German Eagle Here -Bobby
jlueke
If that's a cock then wouldn't these also have to be roosters?
bobbycoin
Oh I agree it is an eagle, I just handnt looked at it to any extent. Saw it, assumeed a cock and moved on not looking at it til you brought it up. I brought this up in chat and everyone agreed it looked like an eagle. I dont believe any reasons for that design came up -Bobby

jlueke
See that's what I hate. You see a coin, you have some questions and all of a sudden you're off on a whole new tangent with new coins, papers, books etc.
ccg
I think it's just a random copy. If I remember correctly, there's a number of Napoleonic AE medals that copy reverse designs from ancients.

whohah
Stujoe, the two fish represent the astrological sign for Pisces, being the last week or so of February every year [Feb 20 to March 20]. I do not know my French military history so well, however. Did Nappy do well in late February 1814?? If so, that would possibly explain the Pisces symbol... Just my US$0.02 worth of hunch... OOPS!! I failed to read Jlueke's post... I guess Nappy DID do well in late February 1814...
