Introduction, UK 50p Error Coin

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've been (very) casually collecting coins from the change I get over the past few years. My collection is tiny (about 7 coins), and not very rare- my most prized piece is a worn out 1936 D buffalo nickel- but I like them and the idea 'finding' something special.

Last night I was at the museum with my wife and son and i bought him one of those 'penny passports' for keeping those smashed souvenir pennies in. He seemed pretty excited about it. Seeing his interest made me think about my coins, so today i pulled them out along with some other coins I had left over from traveling to add them to the collection.

Going through some UK coins I noticed a 1997 50p coin that had a strange line arcing across the head side. I new just enough that coins with flaws can be unique and/or rare. After some time on Google and looking through my son's microscope that I had commandeered, I discovered that I have a die crack error coin. "Pretty neat!" I thought.

l also discovered this forum and decided to share it with you. Here is a scan:

I find the placement of the crack is a little humorous, if not a tad morbid! "Off with MY head!!"

So naturally I was wondering what its value might be. Since it is a defect it doesn't seem that I can just go online and plug in the year and get a result, so I'm hoping you guys could help me out. It is pretty well circulated.

Any information would be greatly appreciated and very interesting!

Welcome to the forum!

A nice error indeed. Unfortunately no great value is attached to it as the errors such as brockages or wrong flans tend to command more of a premium. Even so, a nice find.
