bobh
The 1796 coin in question arrived today. All I can report so far is the diameter, which is mostly 44mm, but at the widest place it is 45mm. The edge is very worn, but it is possible that I can find traces of edge no. 6 (\\\\\\\) under high magnification. Otherwise, if the line we talked about ISN'T the horizontal divider over the date, but merely a gouge or scratch, it is a rather old one. I am tending towards the "not overstruck" camp here, but am not 100% convinced that this is the case. As such, the purchase was certainly worth it! As such, the purchase was certainly worth it! With enough magnification, there is no telling what one can see there. However, when you start seeing a portrait, that means you have gone too far -- that is not traces of an overstrike from an unknown pattern 5 kop of Catherine the Great, but a face of a microbe looking at you.
