Hussulo
Struck up a deal and doing a trade for this: with Northeast Numismatics. They described it as " Russia1841-CNB AY Gold 5 Roubles NGC MS62 Lustrous." Cant' wait for it to arrive.

It shows evidence of clashed dies, particularly noticeable in the incused image of the eagle heads around the "5".
Hussulo
Thanks Grivna, I see what you mean. That's what I like about NEN as well as being a pleasure to deal with, they always take nice pictures. I think what looks like scratches are actually die polishing lines as they run under the orb on the right hand side and the eagles leg on the left hand side. Cheburgen
Nice coin. In 2007 I have purchased 2 coins of this type. 5 Rouble 1841 and 5 Rouble 1842. Both in NGC slabs MS64. Paid $325 for each.

Paid $325 for each. Sounds like a great buy. I liked the coin that was the most important factor for me, but I didn't buy it blind a did a little research for similar coins sold on-line: http://cgi.ebay.com.my/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...em=260435928934 http://www.cmrcc.com/catalog/i19.html I little optimistic??? I know this one's a 64 but I don't think NEN were way out with their price: http://www.vcoins.com/world/worldmoneyshop...p?idProduct=334 at the end of the day knowing what I paid for the coins I traded I am happy with the trade. Having bought it at this price I would be worried until very serious expertise will be made
one-kuna
definition of DIE CLASH - "a die that was damaged by being struck by the opposing die, resulting in the edges or outlines of the design in the opposing die face cutting into the face or design, showing on the struck coin as an outline of the design elements from the opposing die", - A Herbert, Official price guide to mint errors, New York, 2002 in your case it is die cracks / die abraded (polished), not so clear which one from your picture
Hussulo
Speaking of clashed dies, I know its not Russian but check this one out: http://www.northeastcoin.com/popupcontaine...=/inventory.jsp I would of loved to have added that to my gold coin collection. BINGO, EXACTLY - DIE CLASH on german coin, thank you for showing; There is no DIE CLASH on russian gold 5 rubles, it has a die crack or polished die on it. In any case a german coin is just a killer one.

Here is my example of the 1841. The clashing is more pronounced and perhaps easier to see in this image.

one-kuna
The very first coin presented in this post and purchased by you from NEN had no DIE CLASH, that's all
GHV
Nice coin. In 2007 I have purchased 2 coins of this type. 5 Rouble 1841 and 5 Rouble 1842. Both in NGC slabs MS64. Paid $325 for each. You got for a great price, if I not mistaken in 2007 sm64 was selling for about $600-700 average price. Today's market price about $1100-1200 for ms64. One of the common dates but still nice coin if graded high. Last year ms64 examples was selling around 2k, so need couple years or less to get up to that level. Sure it will... On e-bay available one of the highest graded similar coin, so who looking for top grades can easy to hunt for it http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT Here is my example of ms65 Brilliant coin. Congrats. Hussulo, nice purchase!

So strangely to see such poor photo for such distinctive coin I do not trust usually to dealers who place bad images. Is it difficult to make photo better? Is it difficult to make photo better? from one point a seller did not provide better photo for this particular MS65 coin because it is capsulated by NGC and it is his/her reference and trust so the coin photographed will correspond to the actual coin from another point you are right too, better picture could have been provided by a seller to all prospective buyers who will spend $1400
