Here's a link to the page on the PCGS website:

Very interesting to compare prices in the MS-69 and MS-70 columns for the different issues (only the $50 gold buffs).

I own two of the regular strike issues, one 2006 and the other 2008 (i.e., neither is "first strike (FS)", and neither is a proof). While there is a small price hike for 2006 in MS-70 against MS-69 ($250), the corresponding increase for 2008 is $1,350! ;) That's more than double the inherent gold value!

Can anyone give an exact (or even plausible) explanation for this? :ninja: Is it mintage numbers? One would expect the increase to "trickle down" to lower grades as well, but that is obviously not the case.

I wonder just how many buff's got a grade of MS-63? Anybody have a population report handy for these?

Here are some numbers for you

2006 PCGS First Strike Buffalo gold 1 oz MS69: 49,811 coins (Total coins minted by US mint: 337,012)

2007 PCGS First Strike Buffalo gold 1 oz MS69: 9,554 coins (Total coins minted by US mint: 136,503)

2008 PCGS First Strike Buffalo gold 1 oz MS69: 5, 915 coins (Total coins minted by US mint: 189,500)

2008 W PCGS First Strike Buffalo gold 1 oz MS69: 244 coins (Total coins minted by US mint: 9,427)

The MS70's, are even less than these numbers....

The 1 oz, 2008 W, had less than the number of first strikes in MS69...Same for each year

But not as drastic as the 08W :ninja:

Here are the 70's

2006 PCGS MS70: 3337

2007 $50 MS70 First Strike: 843

That is all I have for now...I can't find the 08 W mintage numbers or first strike population numbers

But you see, buffalos in general have gotten out of control, with the extremely low population of the First Strikes, in 2008. The $5 at MS70 sells near $600 now!!!! The issue price was $129!!!
