bill
Likely the value of the holder with a 67 label. The scarcity of the coin itself is secondary.

Please tell me what is not "Absolutely ridiculous" price for such coin. Unfortunately, I don't have one yet. I wish I had bought one 4 years ago ... could have had a nice one for less than $200 back then. I think anything over $300 is overpriced considering that it is actually fairly common, even in good BU condition. I would be willing to spend $200-$250 for one in nice AU grade. one-kuna
1909 gold 5 roubles, NGC MS-67 Absolutely ridiculous, IMHO ... 1909 is NOT RARE! What is not ridiculous today with russian coins?? Monety i Medali Auction 50 in Moscow from April 2008 had such coin not graded MS 67 but see below: lot 428 - 5 рублей 1909 года, ЭБ. Золото, 4,31 г. Сохранность отличная, красивый штемпельный блеск. Severin# 588. Уздеников# 0353 (черта). Биткин# 34 ®. Казаков# 360. оценка: 28 000–35 000 р. итоговая цена: 42 000 р. (about $1700) According above - Russians paid this kind of price ! and it was not graded MS 67 !
bobh
What is not ridiculous today with russian coins?? Good point! Monety i Medali Auction 50 in Moscow from April 2008 had such coin not graded MS 67 but see below:lot 428 - 5 рублей 1909 года, ЭБ. "отличная" would correspond approx. to AU on the US American grading scale ("vorzüglich" in German). Let's see what Kazakov has to say about this ... 1909 five roubles in UNC: $250 (book was written in 2004). 1902 five roubles in UNC: $200. 1903 five roubles in UNC: $150. 1904 five roubles in UNC: $150. MS-67 might sound like a very scarce grade, but it is not so scarce for Nicholas II gold coins which didn't circulate so much. I would add a premium of $100 to the above prices for MS-67 Rarity scale for 1909 five roubles: 9 Interestingly enough, he lists 1910 as 11 on the rarity scale which would make 1910 more common than 1909. As I think most people will agree that 1910 five roubles is indeed a very scarce coin, whereas 1909 isn't, there is some room for "interpretation" here. In the Severin book "Gold and Platinum Coinage of Imperial Russia 1701-1911", in the Appendix where mintage figures are listed (on p. 64 in my copy) he says: "[Mintage] figures from 1905 to 1909 are scanty. A case in point is the 5 Roubles piece of 1909, a date rarely met with in past years but currently glutting the market" It sounds like there must have been a hoard of these released or discovered shortly before Mr. Severin wrote his book (original edition was written in 1958). Now a coin that has "glutted the market" at any point in time cannot be considered rare! And the observed population bears this out. Sorry, but anyone who wants to pay $1700 for a coin like this is paying way too much! Too many speculators instead of collectors out there today, IMHO. one-kuna
So, what is the problem? Just buy a common coin. that is right! is ebay the only place for you to purchase these type of gold coins - there are so many others sources... about 3 millions dollars for 20 gold rubles 1756 of Elizabeth was too much or normal to you? there are thousands of samples I can demonstrate over here to you with ridiculous high prices, so what is your point, yes, it may be too much for 1909 gold piece, but it was already paid not on one ocasion...
