Santa Rosa's Dancing Bears (1897)

My interests in so-called dollars has been restricted to the California Midwinter International Exposition and aluminum so-calleds, especially from the Columbian Exposition. The "official" medal for the Midwinter Exposition became the basis for a series of event medals struck by Moise in California. A couple of these, the Truckee Ice Carnival and the Cloverdale Citrus Fair, are listed in Hibler and Kappen's So-Called Dollars. Others are not, probably because they are rare and rarely encountered. I'm branching out and developing an interest in these pieces. My first acquisition is the Native Sons Celebration pictured here. Mama Bear in her feathered hat and parasol is dancing with Papa Bear in his top hat and cane. A delightful, fun medal.

For comparison, the 1894 Midwinter Exposition medal is pictured below.
