Brazillian Banknotes

When collecting Banknotes I try to collect a certain type or group. For me being from England I collect obviously the BoE banknotes as well as any from countries/islands that have QEII on the front of the banknote.

However I do like to specialise in certain countries & one of my favourites has to be Brazil. Certain ones are fairly easy to obtain here in the UK but others are a pig to get hold of.

I'd though I'd share with you my collections of what I have from my three favourite series from Brazil. If anyone can tell me what these are known as it'll be greatly appreciated:

These are favourite Brazillian banknotes, they have a similar style to the US Banknotes (although quite a few countries did back then) and seem to date from the 1950-1970's (is that right), my favourite two here are the 10 & 20 Cruzeiros, the reverse side of both of these are excellent. I have several more on their way from Denmark & I will post the pictures of these as soon as I get them if anyones interested. BTW does anyone know what values were issued for this series?

These seem to follow on from the above, as indicated by the obverse portrait on the 5 Cruzeiros note. Anything over 10 Cruzeiros seem to be extremely hard to get hold of, I check on both the UK & US ebay sites and neither really had anything in this style except for the 1, 5 & 10 Cruzeiros. Again does anyone know when these were issued from/to & what values were issue for this series.

This is the other series that I like from Brazil, mainly because they are so unusual. Again I only seem to see the 100 & 2000 Cruzeiros in the UK I have just purchased a 500 & 1000 Cruzeiros note from the US so as soon as I get these I'll post the pics. From what I understand this series wasn't that popular in Brazil, to be honest I think they're great. Again does anyone know when these were issued from/to & what values were issue for this series.

Anyone else like these?

Nice notes!

Well, I'm pretty sure I have the numbers.

These notes are harder to track and you need to cross reference series numbers and signatures sometimes. The series numbers on the last to "double print' styles actually have the series listed in as the first four digits in the serial number.

So here's what I got from the catalog:

1st note: 1 Cr. P150b ND (1954-58)

2 2 Cr. P151b ND (1954-58)

3 2 Cr. P157 ND (1957)

4 5Cr. P176d ND (1964)

5 10 Cr. P167a ND (1961)

6 20 Cr. P178 ND (1962)

7 200 Cr. P171b ND (1964)

8 1000Cr. P181 ND (1963)

9 1 Cr. P191Aa ND (1972)

10 5 Cr. P192a ND (1970-71)

11 10 Cr. P193e ND (1980)

12 100 Cr. P198b ND (1984)

13 200 Cr. P199b ND (1984)

This last series (the double printed one) had values of 100, 200, 500, 1000, and 5000. Values exceeded this range for this time-frame, but were not 'double printed'

Hope this helped!

Ps should have adde there are quite a few Sig variations on most Brazilian notes plus a number of currency reforms LOL

Yeah I noticed that, especially with the designs post the double headed ones. The 50cr. not of the 1960's design seems to always be stamped everytime I search for it.

I'll check out your collection as well :ninja:

EDIT: Ah so that's what the 50cr & 100cr look like (of the second type I posted on here) did you find them hard to get hold of at all De Orc?

MORE

Got these from an eBay seller in Denmark:

Green 10cr. and blue 100cr.

2008-08-18-2126-58.jpg

2008-08-18-2128-09.jpg

Three overstamped notes, Mauve 50cr. overstamped with 5 Centavos, Red 100cr. overstamped with 10 Centavos and blue 1000cr. overstamped with 1 Cruzeiro Novo. Although I have seen the other two in their opposing colours, without the overstampings I've never seen the 50cr. in blue or without the overstamping.

I take it there's also a 500cr of this style but as of yet I haven't ever seen one.

One quick query. I noticed, on seeing pictures of notes before the 1960's series that the signature is spralled across the note, was this common place on Brazillian banknotes back then?

It was common on Brazilian notes issued between about 1918 (at least that early- perhaps earlier) until 1950. These were hand signed across the face of the notes. One thing I've never had were two of the same notes with the same signatures... I'd like to know if these were really Individually signed, or what. I can't imagine going in to work to simply sign banknotes thousands of times - but it was perhaps the case. I have not had the chance to ever find that out - Hmm ... perhaps someone here knows the answer?
