More than likely dipped in something to make it look like that. For some strange reason people think they can make a coin worth a lot by dipping, plating, painting. These nickels are often made into jewelry items etc. Somewhere I have three buttons made from late 1936 or 1937 nickels that I found in a relatives stuff.
