Vfox
I think this is a doubled lamination or possibly a split planchet lincoln. I found this is my change today, so I really don't know for sure and was hoping someone else would be able to tell me what the heck this is. It is half as thick as a normal cent, everything is there that should be in the design, it's the exact diameter as a normal cent, just thinner with a really rough and ugly surface. Let me know what you guys think! Thanks!
Mark Stilson
That is an oddball! Next ugliest coin contest?
Becky
If I had to guess, I would say the coin was left in some kind of corrosive for too long. I'm going to say post mint damage. I really think the pitting is an indication of damage.
Vfox
The actual metal is split though, and not all of it is pitted. Take a look at lincolns front shoulder area, it's a completely different layer of metal, and it's not really pitted either. I thought it may have been let in acid as well, but after looking it over I really don't think it was. The scans do little for the depth differences in the coins surface, it's somewhat multi tiered. ccg
My call would be chemical damage. If you've etched a circuit board before, you'll understand what might have happened.
