I got a bunch from the 1770's because of those wonderfully worn half pennies, but little else......1784 anyone?!?!!

Thanks very much Graikos, it's still a little blurry, but I took the photo when I first started using my fiancee's digital, so this was actually one of the better photos I took early on. Lately though, I've always been in a rush for some reason or another, so my quality is slipping in both color correction and picture quality. A good example is the 2 mark in my omnicoin I added a few weeks ago, it's a sharp coin, and silvery-white, but the photo is yellowed and blurry. I'll be sure to re-image at least that one eventually, I really like that coin.

So back to the topic at hand, 1784 anyone? I have a 1780 austrian bullion thaler for that date if I'm allowed to display it, lol. My guess it was minted pretty recently though, somewhat PL.

Somehow I don't think we will get past the early 1700's or late 1600's, even then dates are wishywashy.

Napoleon was indeed a masterful general for his time period, and everyone must remember he deemed himself a soldier many times, although he seemed to mainly work for his own plans, and the propaganda he used was a bit underhanded (Like the letters from "soldiers" making it sound like they beat the Russians), he was in most aspects a powerful leader for his country. His methods seem cruel and horrid by todays standards, but think about many US generals marches during the civil war, raizing town after town.

On a side note, Ingres painting (Napoleon on his Imperial Throne) comes to mind, and the fact that Napoleon hated it, makes me wonder what he really wanted to be. The painting compared him to former kings, and it is my understanding that he hated the idea of a monarchy.

And, if you think he was completely heartless, research the painting, and newspaper baron Bertan, another of Ingres painting subjects. This man was exiled twice by Napoleon for basically trash talking him in his newspapers, but he respected him for having the guts to say those things so much, he never had him killed. Napoleon was an interesting historical figure, and played an important, yet short part in the worlds history. I am no expert on him, but I do enjoy learning about him.

I got a couple proof sets, and a nice 59 proof quarter, although after I took these shots I noticed a little spottiness on the obv. I also got a very nice gift in the mail from Dave!

Is the reverse on that cut strange? Or did you keep it because it's a star note? Btw, the last link is the only one that works, then you have to hit "previous" on the site to see the obv.

With these, the counterfeits are more interesting than the real coins. We all know who made the real ones, but not the counterfeits and they might have even been made in N. America.

I did a little research on what Hussulo said, and that matches with what I figured it is, if it wasn't a real half penny. Which is cool because the real ones are, well, somewhat boring, so I completely agree with Scottishmoney on this. The fakes, either made here or in England are some of the more interesting coins in the colonial era, mainly because most people just accepted them without even caring. It wasn't until the 1780's when a huge flood of these came to America that people really started to take a second look. The Machin Mills varieties are interesting because they were 100% made in the US, but I can't seem to find good information to check if this one is one. The only reason I don't consider two of mine English counterfeits that I mentioned earlier is because of the weight, date, and lack of detail both have. This one on the otherhand is probably an English counterfeit if it isn't real, because it is only .5g-1g under-weight, while the other two I mentioned are 3g-3.5g under-weight.

Hate to be the berear of bad news, but the George III halfpenny is a counterfeit. Probably a contemporary counterfeit. These are often refered to as evasion pieces coin. Still interesting in its own right though.

Ya think so? It's 6.99g, so it's a little heavier than the two Machin Mills I have, both at 4.5-5g, but a little lighter than most other half pennies in the 7.5-8.5g range....so I don't know really. I don't think it's a new fake though, I've had plenty of those, and this doesn't look a thing like them. Do you have any other information on these kind of things Hussulo? I didn't pay much for it, and I honestly like owning old counterfiets, so if it is, no prob, at least I know for sure then.
