I didn't have $300 worth of bad day, but... first, my toilet is broken and I have to manually turn the water off to get it to stop trying to fill itself. And I couldn't call maintenance to have it fixed today because I had to remove the hutch behind and over it first so they can have access and didn't have time to do that before work. Then the lock on my bike decided it was no longer going to open at all -- on the plus side, my bike wasn't locked up at the time, but if I can't lock my bike up, I can't go anywhere. And lastly, I dropped the rear view mirror for my bike as I was pulling up at home and some [adjective] [noun] of a [intensifier] [characterization] *deliberately* *swerved* *to* *run* *it* *over*.
Oy.

What a cool name for town! I wonder what the history of the name is.
It's not far from my home town, actually, although I cannot say I've ever actually been in or even through Risingsun -- it's just not on the way to anywhere from where I lived. My only encounters with it were road signs not pointing in the direction I was going saying things like [ <- Risingsun 6 ]
Looking at the records... they only report that it was named Risingsun in 1894 after having been named Rising Sun in 1874; before that it was variously St. Elms, Coon Town, and Stony Battery (and is not far from Stony Ridge, Ohio, which township I am familiar with). The only name it gives any history for is Stony Battery, after a limestone outcropping.
There's that ol' Ohio practicality.

Nope. I found the image somewhere and used it because I wanted an 'ikaros' image. I've haunted eBay off and on looking for one -- the gold is out of my reach but a silver one finally turned up that no one else bid on.
-
Well well. That coin I use as my avatar? Finally got one! Silver, not gold. Very pretty.

Welcome 2018 from the deep freeze (-9°F !!!) that is Ohio!

Oh, I have the common one. I was only dimly aware of the trial strikes; I generally don't collect non-circulating commemoratives.
-
Ah, thank you for this background information! I have one of the Polish FAO issues (1971 10 złotych), and have seen a few from other countries, but never collected them specifically. What a great idea for a collection!

High reliefIs it just me, or does it look like the foregroundmost cactus is giving us the finger? XD

I've not seen a hexagonal one before. I've picked up a couple Mardi Gras tokens, as the mood strikes rather than out of any particular collecting interest.
-
And I didn't really photograph it all that well -- have I said recently that coin photography is hard?
I'll try again some time.

My first slabbed Jeff! This is a PCGS PR65 1938 Jefferson nickel.

I think it probably says something about my age and mindset when I can't look at Devil's Tower without expecting to see the Close Encounters mothership coming up over it...

I've bought coins from eBay, mostly foreigns for my birth year set where circulated condition is just fine, or mid-range slabbed Ikes. I don't think I would buy a really high-value coin over eBay, I'd want to see it in hand before pulling out my wallet — and I have trouble believing wheat rolls are really 'unsearched'.
-
Heh. Me and that coin were made the same year, and I think it's in better condition than I am.
Nice find!

Awww you scrooge! Just embrace our existence in this big, cold universe!
Considering what happened to us in Nashville with that &*)#^%*)&#$% _(#$^*()%#*(& @&*(%^*)#&ing #$(&*) of a #)&%^#$*) *@*%^% cloud, I take great comfort in eclipses and comets not actually being once-in-a-lifetime events!
-
Interesting Halley's Comet token - I am always terrifically amused by 'once in a lifetime' events that come back on a regular and incredibly predictable schedule. Okay, 76 years is a bit of a wait, but I've seen three much better comets than the disappointing view of Halley we got in '86. And the "once in a lifetime" total solar eclipse that just occurred? The next one is in less than two years (there's an eclipse every year and a half, two years or thereabouts), so I want to see their actuarial charts—heck, the next one in the US is only six and a half years away, and I definitely plan to live to be older than (current age + 7).

I couldn't resist having some fun when I saw this bridge...

Ikes are the only coins that I'm collecting slabbed (so far). That's a beauty.

Nope! I made that mistake once already! Most overrated restaurant I've ever been to. Woosterites seem to be split on it these days.
We shall honorably agree to disagree, then.
-
I don't condone violence but there are an awful lot of ignorant, jerk-ish people these days that seem to think they are entitled to blast their opinions with no consequences.
That clip is actually the very end of about five to ten minutes of that guy incessantly harassing Dr Aldrin after having lured him to the hotel under false pretenses -- Aldrin thought he was there to be interviewed about space travel for a Japanese childrens' program. Buzz held it together until the words 'liar' and 'coward' came out, and then -- very rightly, in my opinion -- brought the incident to a close. The local authorities declined to prosecute after watching the tape and agreeing that the moon landing denier was clearly being aggressive and a threat. Ironically, the tape was provided to the police by the guy who got punched, as he later admitted he had been trying to provoke Aldrin.
And I'm deliberately not using his name because people like that don't deserve even the limited exposure of a friendly forum. I'm not going to provide him the oxygen of publicity when I'm not especially pleased that he's got the oxygen of oxygen.
In other news, I'm in Wooster this weekend! My wife will be in Columbus briefly. Had I planned better, I could've joined her and met you for a drink!
I can think of a couple places to go in the Short North, too! Alas... better luck next time. Have a Coccia House pizza while you're there, at least!
-
I had not -- I generally don't follow local news closely, and what I have over the last week has been mainly about that accident at the state fair. I hope they catch whoever it is before they melt it down for the gold. And also, they should let Buzz Aldrin have a go at the perp.

The Gagarin medal, the last one, is the first really decent picture of a coin I've gotten in some time -- although obviously it's not the camera, it's the cameraman, and judging by the other five, I still need some work. These were all done with my 'new' D40. Also, I updated the image for the Apollo XI/John Glenn medal, so the post previous reflects the new image now.
Bad day anyone?

I believe I used other nouns and adjectives at the time, and probably at least one hand gesture...
