  1. Well, I used Photobucket to store/host medal pictures for many years, all the while being free. Photobucket made this change suddenly with little or no notice. I have used Imgur and although it worked the same as Photobucket, I did not use since many of my medal pics were already at the Photobucket site.

It is just a shame that so many pictures are no longer visible...

  2. Wow, just found out that Photobucket no longer allows free 3rd party hosting for photos. If I want ALL the photos I have placed in this thread to show up (from photobucket) they are asking for $39.99 a month. That is the only option that allows 3rd party hosting. I will not pay that amount not even any amount close to that.

It will take a lot of time and since this thread has actually lost peoples' interest in the last couple of years, I am unsure if I will take the time to post all those pictures from my PC. I am sorry that all my pictures are gone now. :(

I never thought Photobucket would do such a thing but in some ways, it does not surprise me. Money is very important!

A lot of work, effort, and pictorial history gone...

  3. This is a repeat of my last post in the Sentimental Tokens which, because of its uniqueness, deserves its own separate topic.

Solid silver sentimental token, which in itself is extremely rare, this token though possesses another level of rarity entirely!

    Sentimental Magazine advertising excerpt,
"A Sentimental Fable in French, in every Number(of the Sentimental Magazine), to be translated in the succeeding Number, the best Translator of which will be entitled to a Silver Medal, with his Name engraved thereon; and those Correspondents who furnish us with the best Poems, or the best Articles in Prose, in the Course of every Month, shall likewise be entitled to a Silver Prize Medal, with their Names, or Signatures, engraved thereon"

So only 2 engraved silver medals were presented each month but for how many issues is unknown(as far as I can ascertain). The AE medals were only issued for 13 months from April Ist 1773 - April 1774. I have never seen another of the awarded silver medals and was fortunate to have acquired this example. It is possible that all the award medals were of George the III, if not it would suggest that this was one of the first two won. The inscription around the edge reads "THE REWARD OF MERIT I . DENIS PHILOM . SOC ." (Philomath Society) so it either was for the best English translation of a French fable, or for the best poem or article in prose.

    Great addition! :winner_first_h4h:

  4. Happy New Year everyone!

I have a few duplicates and a few cleaned/polished schützenfest medals and a few duplicate thalers that I am going to put up for auction on eBay over the next several weeks. I plan to post one every week or so with a starting bid of $9.99 and with free shipping.

Art - if this is not okay to inform members about this, please let me know.

The first medal went up Sunday and is -

    Rod,

Great looking medal and also one of my favorites!

Also presented in 1897 as I have R701b, M377 with the inscription of "Cible Blanche 2me Prix".

Will certainly let you know if I ever decide to part with it.

    Tim

    Hi Tim,

Yes, I have an 1897 piece, just missed the date in my post. Thank you for bringing the omission to my attention. I certainly will entertain any duplicates, so if you ever make the decision to sell, please let me know.

    Happy New Year!

  6. 1895 Genève, canton Genève

    R686a / M377
    Excercice Arquebuse et Navigation
    AR
    51 mm
    Engraver: Hugues Bovy, Genève

Mintage: 8 pieces for this date

    RRR

This is my favorite large shooting medal. Richter states that the mintage for 1895 is 7 examples although my Father and I know of 8 pieces. My example below is in outstanding condition with proof-like surfaces.

    The medal was awarded in 1893, 1894, 1895, 1897, 1898, 1899, 1900, 1901, 1903, 1904, 1905, and 1906.

It was struck in silver and bronze with the silver examples being somewhat harder to find.

Since this is my favorite larger schützenfest medal, I have attempted to collect as many silver and bronze pieces as I can when the opportunity arises. I am asking my fellow CoinPeople members to keep an eye out for this medal for me. If you see one or have one you would sell, please contact me.

  7. I agree with the letter designation of JYWL, as shown in the photo of the old font (great research by the way), the only letter that is somewhat different than the script above is the W, the others are pretty much spot on.

However, I am somewhat suspect of it being the Scandinavian word for Christmas "Jywl" (as shown above as a word in the attached Scandinavian excerpt) since the embossed script on the case has periods between each letter. Does anyone know if the word jywl was used for Christmas ever with periods as on the case?

The periods would lead me to assume that it is an abbreviation... J.Y.W.L. Just my opinion, although I could see the reasoning/assumption of Pope Pius and Jesus/Christmas.
