My mom always saves her pennies and gives them to me when I go home. Last time I was home a week ago she gave me 107 pennies, including 5 wheaties from 1945-1958.

I had a connection at a local bank in Jersey City about 10 years ago, and I just kept going in and asking her for $200 in halves and after about the 3rd time she just told me she'd save all the halves for me and I could just come once a month and pick them up. Lots of Franklins, 90% and 40% Kennedys on that one, the only thing she wouldn't give up was one walker that she got in that she gave to her son. Can't argue with that!

I have a 20 kroner note from when I was in Sweden in 1995, but I think that I read on the central bank's website that it is no longer legal tender. At least it's still crisp unc!

The gas station down at the corner from my office has a sign on the counter that they take these notes, which I assume means that they will give me $10 in gas if I give them one. I just wish they'd give me the same in gas for a silver round!
Alternative currencies like this will be novelties unless and until the Fed creates a hyperinflationary environment like 1923 Germany. Then people will be more than happy to trade in hard currency. In fact, evidence suggests that even mild bouts of hyperinflation, or consistent long-term debasement of currency will prompt people to demand hard currency, similar to what is happening in Mexico today.

The weekend of July 4th, I looked through $100 in halves and found 7 40% silver one (1966-69) and a 1963-D Franklin! I love finding silver!
