I haven't figures out how long it will take to distribute my slabbed coins, let alone raw coins and such. Probably a long time. I guess whatever is leftover when I'm gone can be sold or just divided up.

That is a very nice idea. Unless the one grand kid shows an interest in the tokens, about the only thing I intend to disperse to the kids and grandson is the PM's or what is left if the need arises for the small amount we have. At the rate it isn't growing, it might need the kids age4s to hit the 2005 All the talking heads on the tube keep talking about. Worse case is they will not care for anything thing, but the resale value.
I was glad to hear that after all the storms down your way that you were ok. Even if the PM's go away the grandson will get the rock collection and fossil. Even at 4 years old he has been dino crazy since about two!
I think he'll enjoy the rocks, after all he has a common interest with his Granddad!!!

These are medals. I'm not familiar with them but they do appear to have been struck to proof standards. Very nice.

that's a great start ... i think it may be difficult to reach many kids this way for a bunch of reasons, but i also think there's a fundamental sort of curiosity that perhaps can be tapped.
when i'm reaching across certain divides and i have to write for younger or less literate audiences i use a tool like this: http://www.hemingwayapp.com/ ... it analyzes your writing and helps you break things into more accessible bites.
Thanks Hen... I'll bookmark that and give it a go for January's writeups.

I am being reacquainted with my collection right now. One of my plans is to consolidate it down to just the coins/notes that mean the most to me. Since what I want to slough off doesn't have a lot of value and since I don't want to haggle with a dealer, I plan to give away the coins/notes to neighborhood kids. I'll announce it to a local message board and offer a handful of coins each month to any interested kids. I figure it's a good way to get some interested in collecting.
Sounds like a good plan. We used to have a few youngsters in the local club and everyone gave them stuff, but now the youngest collector in the club is about 45.

I sold off most of my collection when I started grad school, so now I'm thinking about returning and what I might return to. I think you're doing a really generous thing, Art ... The only bit I wonder about is whether or not what you write is meaningful to those you're giving these coins to ...
I wonder the same thing. I try to make it meaningful by talking about things like collecting when I was a kid and getting rolls from the bank and such things.

As you may know, I have been collecting for quite some time. I have a pretty decent collection, IMHO, including several full sets of certified Roosevelt Dimes and a few almost complete collections of certified Jefferson Nickels. I don't do much in active collecting any longer and instead of selling the collection right now I've decided to give a coin or two each month to each of the Grandkids and great grandkids. (A few to kids too). Along with each coin I am sending them a writeup about the coin - the technical type stuff, composition, designer, mint, etc. I also include info on why I like the particular series and sometimes even why a particular coin is special - like an ANACS recolored MS64 Indian Head Cent.
After a while, I may sell what is left but for the present I figure on a coin a month for each person and maybe do that for a few years. I started this last year in Sept. and so have done Indian Head Cents, Roosevelt Dimes, and SAC dollars. All certified. All nice grades. Dimes were silver. MS66 or PF69/70.
So what do you think? Anyone doing something similar?

I saw the nice grouping of coins that you posted in the Gallery. Very nice. I must say that coin collecting has proven to be one of the most pleasant pastimes I have encountered. Thanks for the nice photos.

Done a few times since Sept. Thanks for the patience.

Hate to say this but we really need to tighten up the requirements for members as spammers can get in easy and trust me i'm wondering how more i'll report before things are done
It is harder and harder to keep them away and Mods are off doing other things a lot these days. On my part - sorry for inactivity but it will probably remain that way.

Nice find. Enjoy it.

Horrible! I hope the piece hasn't been destroyed

I do. A 1953 MS66fb. Beautiful colors and probably the most solid non-proof strike in my collection

That is a neat piece of memorabilia
1909 S Indian Head cent, real or fake?

Sorry. I wouldn't guess either way based on the pictures. An added "S" can be extremely difficult to detect. High magnification might help but I'm not sure on that one.
