  1. Scott - Couldn't bring myself to part with the only piece of gold I've ever owned/probably will ever own.

Bill - Most definitely! I'll probably be there between chorus rehearsals.

Marianne - I didn't know there was an "old" SF mint, but that makes sense! I was SO disappointed to learn the current mint does not do tours (but I guess I understand); that's gonna be a day trip!

  2. It took finding a 1998 edition of "North American Coins and Prices" on the streets of San Francisco to re-ignite the spark. It's been a long few years!

In 2009 I had to dump more than half of my collection when my husband was offered (and accepted) $40,000/year job that was retracted after moving into a new condo and buying a new car in order for us to make payments until something else came along (which it didn't, we ended up in my mother-in-law's basement).

Luckily, I got to keep my prized type collection which I moved with us to San Francisco in May 2011. Still, settling into an (exponentially) higher cost-of-living situation has kept it sitting in a DirecTV cardboard box in my closet.

Anyway, so I decided to quit sulking and get back into the swing of things, and here I am! I'd love to hear all the latest developments (well, since 2008!) with the website and your collections (among other things you'd like to share). And hello to all of those I still need to meet!

  3. 1964 Kennedy.

I think I scared the poor foreign lady who dumped her change on the counter for us to count. She had a ton of Kennedys, SBAs and Ikes, but just the one silver piece. So I traded her for it.

P.S. My hubby is a good learner! He brought me home a 1957 Roosie because it "looked different."

  4. On Friday, I stopped by the White Castle to get some lunch when the woman in line in front of me got her change and said, "Oh, look! I didn't know they had new pennies!" and since I was paying with credit I turned right around and bought it from her. She may have thought I was a little psycho.

Does that count as finding in circulation?

  5. Something old and something new:

Usually I get my new quarters/dollars at the bank in brand new rolls but somehow the kids at the all night skate got New Mexico before the bank did...

Also, LAST sale of the shift, girl comes up and drops what sounded like a half on the counter - she had wanted a $1 soda but only had two quarters, one of which was a 1964! I lent her the extra 50 cents and took my new silver :ninja:

  6. First off, sorry it's been a while guys, I've been running around everywhere in preparation for Easter.

Also, when I clicked on this thread. I expected questions more along the line of:

    What occupation do you have?

    What are your vices?

    What redeems you?

Are you athletic, artsy, nerdy, boring, or all of the above?

Would you rather: backpack across the world, play shuffleboard on a cruise ship, play Halo 2?

That kind of stuff to really get to know each other in a way easy to judge.

    - Student and soon to be (I hope) a Spanish teacher.

    - I nag and I have such a fear of puking that I'm afraid to eat whole meals or stay in the apartment with a sick hubby.

    - I cook and clean :ninja:

    - Artsy more than any of the other above (but haven't exactly had time for it lately)

    - Um, Halo 3, definitely.

  7. Find of the month:

So a kid came up to the counter at work and dumped a shirtful of quarters onto the counter (ended up about $20 worth). Immediately I swept over (of course, while in the middle of completing a sale) and snagged four silver pieces. I was elated the whole night - partly because I could recognize them so easily.

Unfortunately, I suspect these were originally from someone's collection because they are in excellent condition and were accompanied with some brilliant early State quarter designs.

    1964, 1963-D, 1959, 1959-D

  8. Doing my rounds of the banks in town to collect all of the half dollars I could find, I came across one Eisenhower that the teller "couldn't get rid of" and, out of about 40 halves, one 1964-D Kennedy :ninja: Felt like the trip was worth it, even though according to some tellers someone had just come in and cleaned them out of halves.

  9. Two posts in a row! I RULE at the circulation game. ::Begin massive dry spell::

Found a 1959-D nickel in the register, had a quarter in my pocket, so I pulled out two more dimes, one of which was a dime from 1964 which I had overlooked! How many others have I missed???

And, I traded out a star note - my first! - $1. Are they worth anything more than face or are they just oddities?
