BKB, I still do not think that $100 fakes are the dangerous ones.
And that 1654 Novodel I used to own (post 5) - paid $500 for it 15 years ago.
-
Yes, but cost is a big consideration. One thing is to get a fake at full price and another one is to get it at low price. Chances are consideribly higher to get a fake when getting something at low price on Ebay. Yes, miracles do happen, but not often enough. And as long as you were able to return all 4 items, you are still ahead (with more experience).

I also saw it on Ebay. Looks Novodelish, but did not look convincing enough to me to reach for catalogs.and compare.

At the risk of catching sht for being negative , I do not buy overstruck coins anymore -- they are just too damn easy to fake.
Incoming... The history of Russian Numismatics is history of overstriking. Might as well stop collecting copper.

Did they really use Dassier's design on some 5 kopeek coins?
Just looked at Bitkin 543 (1758 5 kopeek Sestroretsk). Certainly looks appropriate.

There is insurance, but now it is pretty low for Russian and Chinese coins (new slabs). Plus you have to prove your case.

Not the first time I see fake TM slabed with magic words "environmental damage"

on both sides.

Well, I do not like novodels, but type I novodel certainly has value, since original dies are used.

Steve, Where were those boxes? ANS?

Today was first and I believe only one phone bidder for one coin and auctioneer apologies for for delay in the room.
I was on the phone the first day. Heard other phones in the background in English. My results - 1 coin

Well deserved honor! I hope to see Bob in Philadelphia next week.

BTW, lot 124 also has wrong description. Bitkin number is correct, but the description belongs to the previous lot (123)
-
Picture is incorrect for lot 124.

I think the French one (probably this one) just sold on Ebay for $50. They seem to be pretty rare. But why should not they be? Durov was probably giving them out, sort of like a business card.

I do not think Markov undergrades his coins. The low end for Gangut would be $7000 or so. And then depending on the actual condition.
What are you planning to do with your 5-rouble collection, sell it at an auction? Probably a good time for that. Seems high grade 5 roubles, that are not the most common, bring huge money, especially if slabed.
-
I looked at your site and did not find Gangut in your commemorative section. What's wrong with it?
-
Kopeikin's "guess" is right on. It sold for $1273 on Ebay. Seems the coin was harshly cleaned plus all those edge nicks...
-
I think we all watched this auction. And probably most of us already have this coin type.
-
That's great! I wonder what pushed them to publish these.

Eagle side is in the XF territory, portrait possibly a little less so.
