Yes, I know him. He is a big time dealer out of Russia. But as big as he is, this collection is of a much biger caliber.

Not true. This is an old colelction that was put away for many years.

Finally I'll have to check the ANS copy of Ball VIII (1932) to see if by chance prices were written in, as they were in many other catalogs I have from that period. My catalog has no prices, nor does the Heidelberg copy.

Yes. He had a few more medals at more reasonable prices (Ivanov and Yudin medals on The Northern War with Peter I portraits at ~$400 each), but nothing of interest for me. The cheaper ones aventually sold, which makes sense.

I did not do well either, since I was not bidding on anything in auctions and did not find anything on the floor. There were a few good copper medals on the floor - Peter II coronation, one by Schultz and one by Jeger, in copper. The first one was offered for $4200 and the second one for $3800. A little crazy, if you ask me. My guess is that dealer did not really want to sell them.

A friend of mine bangs with a hammer lightly along the perimeter on the edge. At some point slab cracks open into two halves. I think I did it once too.

Diakov's catalog does not really go into the subject of actual existence of medals in different medals, it only anticipates (assumes) existence, most of the time. White metal is not liked in Russia very much, so no mentioning of that at all, for any medals.

I have not seen it before. To be honest, I never look at the German Ebay lately.The item was pointed ou to me by one of the members of this forum. How much did it sell for before? I wonder what the previous buyer was expecting from this piece.

I have a similar piece, but only one side. It has glue on the other side, so was probably some kind of exhibition piece. I wonder if one from Lanz is similar in make.

I think English version of the book will be available in US in January or so. Most likely this book will be sold in US for more than in Russia. Do not forget the shipping cost from there to here.

Diakov's book has photograph from the real coin. If you so desire, you can make a trip to Hermitage, pay $200 and ask them for a better photo. Did you know that there is an intersing super rare 1710 ruble? You should check into that one too. Why get stuck on just 1707. Picture of that one can be requested from GIM, probably for the same amount - $200.

I think good coins will sell well at any semi-known auction. There was a sale in taly a few days ago with a few of ex-UBS 6 Sodermann gold coins. They did very well. Kunker is a good venue. At Sincona you will be competing with the collection they will be selling for the next few years, and your coins would not be offered on the same days, so the crowd you are hoping for will not be there.

It is at Hermitage. Can you share the reason for your search? BTW, the new book by Diakov on Gold and Silver coins of Peter I has a great picture of this coin, the best one ever.

This rare 1707 is not in the Smithsonain collection. It is probably somewhere in Russia.
