foundinrolls Posted June 8, 2006 Report Share Posted June 8, 2006 Hi, There are three dies the obverse, the reverse and the collar. Most people forget about the collar die. It comes in from the side and holds the coin in place when it is being struck. On coins with reeding or lettered edges, it actually imparts a design to the coin. When the collar doesnt fully surround the coin during a strike, metal from the planchet squeezes up around the edge of the coin in this way. The collar die was a little out of adjustment.
