Czechoslovakia 1969 5 Korun Doubled Die

SMS

Recommended Posts

Still going through my collection and cataloging everything. Coin #523 is a 5 Korun from the Czechoslovakia Socialst Republic, 1969 straight date. This year had two major date varieties, this being the most common. The die doubling appears only on the devices and date of the obverse. The legend is not doubled.

Has anyone seen or heard of any other known specimens for a 1969 5 Korun DDO? How rare is any doubled die in the Czech-Socialist mintages? And are there any references out there for European error varieties? Thanks in advance!

Haven't seen or heard of that particular date/denomination having DDO, but doubled dies are not extremely rare for CSR coins. Somewhere around here (I am sure I will find them sometime in 2008 or 2009) I have a couple of lower denomination (aluminum) pieces with doubled dies and other errors.

I don't remember for sure what all is in that group (was about 20-30 pieces, if I remember correctly), but I do remember a Hungarian 2 filler piece (center hole) with very predominant die clashing, signs of the clashes visible on both sides of the coin. Also have a Czech 10 haleru from the late 50's or early 60's (the larger quarter sized coins) that had a rotated reverse, about 30° ccw.

Not sure about any error/variety guides. Maybe we should start an on-line database to document some of them (one of these days!). If/when you get into the modern Slovenian coins, let me know. There are all kinds of varieties that aren't documented in Krause, but I know where to find the information. (different master dies used, creating 2 distinct reverses for a couple denominations). I also have good images of the differences in the K & BP mint designations for the tolar pieces.

Thanks Khuli! If the Czech DDOs are common enough, I may just add a DDO section to my collection for them (though my collection is fairly small for what it is). I've gone through 700 coins so far in my collection (weeding out the duplicates) and this is the first error I've found so far. So many coins, so much information, so little time. Sometimes it makes you wonder if "professional" historians even go through as much historical information as numismatists do.

Thanks again!

And GX, when is that 1913 5 kopeks gonna arrive? :ninja: Hopefully I can find as good of a deal as I did on the 10, 15 and 20 I got.

lol SMS - you most certainly have a nice set of the 1913 silver kopeks there. Perhaps, you might be able to complete a type set of 1913 circulated coins, that is if you aren't into collecting the mintmasters as well. If that's the case, all you need is 1/2, 1, 2 and 3 copper kopeks, 5 kopek, 50 and 1 ruble silver, as well as the commemorative Romanov ruble. Fortunately, no gold ruble in that year.

I'll look if I can get another 5 kopek in the same year, but I doubt that is going to be easy :ninja:
