When did the festivities start? If I remember correctly, they started on the 17th, and lead to the big celebration on the 25th.

 

You are thinking of the Saturnalia. The worship of Sol Invictus was a seperate event that started late in the 2nd century and ended when Constantine decided to switch deities.

Yes the Natalis Invictus was celebrated December 25th. I think that may have been done on top of or in addition to the birth of Mithra.
