bagerap
Here is a medal celebrating the marriage of Princess Alice & Grand Duke Louis of Hesse: And another for the opening of the International Exhibition: Both events took place in 1862, but as far as I can ascertain the happy couple did not visit the exhibition. Scottishmoney
Both events took place in 1862, but as far as I can ascertain the happy couple did not visit the exhibition. Curiously looking in wikipedia the wedding was reported to have happened during the mourning period for Prince Albert, thus there was no public church ceremony and Queen Victoria described the event as more a funeral than a wedding. And they were a remarkably unhappy couple in marriage. She passed away in 1878 after an illness.
constanius
By T. Ottely 5Imm. Brown lists this as BHM#2737 RRR. Allen SK-B160 RRR. Most unofficial medals were struck before the exhibition building was completed and used the estimated rental cost, £300,000. This medal was struck to commemorate the marriage, which took place on July 1st. 1862 and the reverse shows the costs as £430,000 which includes a final payment to purchase the exhibition building. "Of the tenders sent in, that furnished by Mr. Kelk and the Brothers Lucas, being the lowest, was accepted. For the rent of the building a sum of £200,000 was absolutely guaranteed; if the receipts exceeded £400,000, the contractors were to be paid £100,000 more for rent; and they were bound, if required, to sell the whole for a further sum of £130,000, thus making the whole cost £430,000"
bagerap
Thanks Pat. I was so sure it was a mule that BHM never occurred to me, particularly as it has a 90º rotation.
constanius
Thanks Pat. I was so sure it was a mule that BHM never occurred to me, particularly as it has a 90º rotation. Leslie Lewis Allen, in "The World's Show......Crystal Palace Medals etc", does mention the reverse die axis points to 3 o'clock.
bagerap
A timely reminder, the last time I tried to order that book I received something entirely different. I think Coincraft may have a few copies.
