Serano
Hi there, I am looking for any information on the banknote shown below. It showed up in a pile of worthless German inflation notes and I sure am glad that I checked it out in Pick. Apparently it's very rare. Information on the note or the bank that issued it is hard to find, though, so I hope that some of you clever people can help. Any information will be appreciated. Also, does anyone know how much a note like this should realistically sell for? Thanks, Marcel

MMMM
Rare and Ugly. It is not German rather a Russian occupation note of Latvia. It looks like to be the 1863 seal for the Rigaer Bank. This would be Latvia P-A1 in the SCWPM General issue. But I could be wrong.
Serano
Thanks so far. MMMM, you are right - it is P-A1 and I am quite certain that it's genuine. The interesting thing is that the banknote only uses one language - German - in an area where one should think that Russian would be relevant as well. But I suppose there's a reason for that. Does anyone have suggestions as to where I could find more info? Google is not that helpful // Marcel

Until end of second war 1941-5 there were many Germans living in Baltic states.
chinnotes
This note is rare, but not very rare. Sometimes the note can be found in auctions. One piece –much better looking than yours, but repaired- was in an auction of Cortrie, Germany, Dec. 2010. Starting price 1600 Euros. I believe the piece did not sell. The same piece was in another auction of Cortrie, Oct. 2012, starting price 900 €. Another picture of the note you may find here: http://www.collectweb.nl/item/51938/5814 There is a book on the history of the bank: “Die Rigaer Börsenbank 1864-1914…..”. Issued in 1914 by the Börsenbank itself, commemorating 50 years of the bank. I do not have this book as –although a dealer in worldbanknotes- I myself collect only Chinese notes. This book is written in German, and right now happens to be available at AbeBooks.de Erwin
