STEVE MOULDING
I got an email asking what this is. Looks like a fantasy coin to me, but maybe somebody here has better information. Thanks
Saor Alba
It is some sort of commemorative medal for the Makarovsky Zheltovodsky monastery in Sarans'k Mordovia.
STEVE MOULDING
It is some sort of commemorative medal for the Makarovsky Zheltovodsky monastery in Sarans'k Mordovia. Thanks! As additional information, the email I got said the following: "This is a bronze coin, 30 mm. diameter. It depicts the Makaryev Monastery on one side, and St. George on the second one, denomination one denga. The date is 1620 (probably when the monastery was founded), but my guess is about 250 years older" Having a Denga denomination didn't make much sense to me, hence the 'fantasy' speculation. Candidate
I think, it is a private souvenir jeton, definitely issued after 1991 and it's price is close to nothing - maybe a dollar or two. Here are discussions on other forums: http://www.reviewdetector.ru/index.php?act=ST&f=34&t=63677 http://tboard.numizmatik.ru/_n14275_p1.html - There it is mentioned that some person offered these jetons in 2004, stating that he has 4000 pcs. of them - most possibly, he is the manufacturer :-) http://numizmat.ru/forum/archive/index.php/t-19092.html http://kladenets.ru/?p=5265 Here's better picture: http://tokenoman.ru/content/view/917/41/lang,ru/ And this is a recent auction sale (around $80 with BP): http://www.wolmar.ru/auction/432/333525?page=34 Though, most possibly, it is not a real sale :-)... as it is offered at Molotok much cheaper - at 500 RUR (approx. $18), see here: http://nnov.molotok.ru/zheton-makarevskij-zheltovodskij-monastyr-i1740779109.html
