Hi everyone. I have been collecting Australian coins and bank notes for a few years now. I have started to get interested in world bank notes now but lack knowledge. Is there anywhere I can get extensive info and does anyone have any suggestions for a theme to collect ?

cheers guys

Hello, there are many themes to collect; some people only collect French or Russian banknotes. Some people collect only from places they have been to. Or only those banknotes with years they were born. I personally collect banknotes with animals depicted on them.

You collect banknotes from Australia, this is one of my favorite Australian banknote sites: http://www.australianbanknotes.net

I suggest you check out Ron Wise's online catalog to see the many verities of banknotes : http://aes.iupui.edu/rwise/default.htm

Also here are some more very good sites to visit.

Another thing you can try is go to your local library and see if they have a copy of one of Krause Publications’ “Standard Catalog of World Paper Money”. There are a few different catalogs for Modern and those that date before 1963. There is even a special one. Thumb through and see what you like.

I collect many different things in world money myself but here are some oddities that you might want to consider

German Notgeld (Series Notes) you can pick up bulk lots of these for about 90cents aussie or less so quite a cheap hobbie with massive variaty

Austrian Notgeld much like German but cheaper not generally as colorful but plent of great stories behind these note :ninja:

Non paper bank notes eg, leather, silk, linen, al foil to see some examples there is a section on my site for non paper bank notes see http://germannotgeld.com mostly these are not cheap your few common types are about $8+ but some are in the thousands of euros the majority are in the range of $50-150AUD

POW notes you can get many different counties some linen and other non paper types as well, quite an interesting range. prices can start from a few dollars but go steadily up
