bobh
Interesting photo I found in the biography of S. V. Rachmaninoff written by Robert Walker (perhaps Robert Matthew-Walker??), assuming that this is THE GDM (SVR is sitting third from the left): Does anybody know if he was also a coin collector? A lot of famous musicians were (Jascha Heifetz, for example).

one-kuna
Does anybody know if he was also a coin collector? A lot of famous musicians were (Jascha Heifetz, for example). No, he was not. Well, just reviewed his profile, Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich (1878-1918) was this kind of guy, who could do the following: ...Each morning, before commencing work, the emperor (Alexander III, note by one-kuna) would go to a window and stand leaning out looking at the lawn. The f ollowing morning after his dousing, Michael lay in wait in the room above his father, and when Alexander III leaned out of the window, he was greeted with a bucket of water from above. None od Alexander's others children would have dared such an indignity, but Michael got away wiyht it..." from a book The Grand Dukes by D.Chavchavadze.
