One listing for an oval medal of Leopold & Joseph Holy Roman Emperors.

http://books.google.ca/books?id=zxtsNg4YGl...p;q&f=false

Abb. 39 Ovale Medaille auf die Kronung Josephs I. zum Romischen Konig mit Brustbildern Leopolds I. und Josephs I. My Translation follows

Oval Medal of the Coronation(1690) of Joseph I. as King of the Romans(Germany) busts of Leopolds I(Holy Roman Emperor). and Joseph I(later to replace his father as Emperor(1705)

No actual description of the medal. Might be the same as yours though. Pictures would be good.

Joseph I, 1678-1711, Holy Roman emperor (1705-11), king of Hungary (1687-1711), King of Romans(Germany) Coronation 26 January 1690 in Augsburg, King of Bohemia (1705-11), son and successor of Leopold I. Joseph became Holy Roman emperor in the midst of the War of the Spanish Succession and died before it ended.

The link should work now http://books.google.ca/books?id=zxtsNg4YGl...p;q&f=false You can see why Leo was nicknamed 'Hogmouth' from your pics.

Picture of the obverse of your medal here http://books.google.ca/books?id=zxtsNg4YGl...p;q&f=false

The latin on the reverse 'nec rabide solis te de neq cornua lune terrent quin pignus generosum ducat ad alta' I think translates very roughly as: Not raging Sun or vile horned moon(The moon's crescent often adorned Luna's head suggestive of horns, and was known as cornua lunae), earthly riches let noble aristocrates be otherwise. The larger bird represents Leopold(Emperor, older & wiser) teaching his young son Joseph to soar/rule/behave as a King. That is, they rule with kindness & generosity, not anger. IMHO.
