bobh
Here is the link to the auction lot: Helios auction, May 20 I think this coin might be a fake, but there might be more varieties than I am aware of: You can compare it with these: PCGS CoinFacts page for 1878-S trade dollars or the HUGE images here (warning: 10MB image file size!) - http://caimages.collectors.com/coinfacts/large/03674160.jpg What do you think? I agree, I would say it is fake. The side with the eagle is correct for the year, but the side with liberty was made from a die that was used 1873-1875, NOT 1878. Definite fake. The reverse die is not even close to the genuine. RWJ
bobh
Just received a reply from the auction house (a Dr. Robert Stark) and he confirmed our suspicions, stating that the coin would be removed from the auction tomorrow. He was very nice about it. Thanks to everyone for your help in keeping this auction clean! BTW, is the somewhat misshapen "U" of "UNITED STATES..." (reverse side) typical for this fake? If so, it would certainly be an easy way to diagnose it. There are other signs, of course (e.g. position of bottom-most arrow head in relation to the digits below, and the eagle feathers certainly aren't what they should be). (Just in case the images disappear from the Helios site, I have copied them here: http://homepage.hispeed.ch/coinsareforever...rade_dollar.jpg)
