frank
I've had this little coin for years --maybe 15 mm across at its widest-- and assume from my research that it's a halfgroat. What is its approximate date? is it Spink 2579, as I have been told?
Brian2
Hammered coins not my thing, but the bust does not look like Elizabeth somehow. It looks more like Mary or someone else. ??
Brian2
Just looked in my book and there is a Mary penny which has the same reverse, and obverse edge reads M D G ROSA, which seems to correspond to yours. (though difficult to read) Anyway, I'm sure someone on here will either put me right, or confirm what you say it probably is.
YeOldeCollector
This is definitely an Elizabeth I Halfgroat. The two pellets behind the bust signify its worth of two pence. The Spink reference is indeed 2579, the coin having no date or rose.
frank
Thank you Clive! I thought I might be hearing from you on this one... It's actually a much prettier coin that my photo shows. Now I'll just put it back in its holder, knowing that it is what I thought it was.
