hiho
Very nice gold franc, and it looks genuine to me, but the Chinese counterfeiters are getting better everyday, so it's hard to say. I would suggest sending it to NGC to be sure.

Yes ..... may be .... but I do not think it's some kind of Chinese production ..... but it's possible that this coin was illegally mint some time after Jean II died. A few details: wheight is 3.81 g, 27-28 mm in diameter and ~0.62 mm thick. I have also a Gold Franc of his son, Charles V - Franc a Pied wheight is 3.73 g, 28-29 mm in diameter and ~0.62 - 0.65 mm thick. And I have the same question: Is it genuine or some kind of imitation? Thanks, Serguei
Hussulo
I'm not sure but if it is original it certainly is a lovely coin.

Dear Hussulo, what is the reason that you think these coins are dubious? I really would like to discuss them with someone having experience with gold french medieval coins Thanks a lot for your interest to them, Serguei
Hussulo
Dear Hussulo, what is the reason that you think these coins are dubious? I really would like to discuss them with someone having experience with gold french medieval coins Thanks a lot for your interest to them, Serguei I have no reason and they are most likely real however I have no authority or enough knowledge to call them genuine. Do you have a reason to doubt their authenticity? Have you weighed them? I do have a couple of French hammered gold coins but I don't actively collect them. All I know about them is what I see and read from past auctions. As a pointer can you tell me how you determine the person they are minted for? The designs for the Franc à pied are quite similar. The legend on the one you show to me looks a lot like this one which is for Charles V: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.ph...25&Lot=3103 I have found other ones: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/results.php?...amp;results=100 but none for Jean II Le Bon.
