Suspected fake $100 note handed to police

By Julia Ng, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 24 April 2007 2109 hrs

SINGAPORE: A mini-mart owner in Ang Mo Kio says he may have been handed a fake $100 note by a shopper last Saturday.

Mr Ng Peng Lay, who runs a mini-mart at Block 448 in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10, had gone to Comfort Delgro along Braddell Road, to change $4,000 into coins.

But before handing over the money, he noticed something different about one of the $100 notes.

He got the staff to check and was told that it was a counterfeit note.

Upon close examination, they noticed the colour on the note's left was very dark, and the kinegram (security seal) looked like it was pasted on manually.

Mr Ng, who does not want to appear on television, has since lodged a police report.

Meanwhile police remind the public to report any suspected fake notes immediately.

Those found guilty of trafficking or using fake notes will be jailed for up to 10 years or for life and also be liable for a fine. - CNA/yy
