Sequential Serial Numbers

I don't do currency, so I'm curious as to how many sequential serial numbers would make for a nice collection in any particular series? 10? 25? 50? 100? or more? What are your thoughts? Would 500-1000 sequential serial numbers bring a nice premium if selling? Thanks in advanced!

Assumption

--------------

I think you asked a good question on investment banknotes. I presume that you are keeping them for investment since you mentioned about "a nice premium if selling".

Choosing the right denomination for your sequential set

----------------------------------------------------

First of all, take a good look at the denomination of your own countries. I also assume that you are to focus on your local currency. It is the best way as you are in contact with your own currencies. Do you know which denomination is produce much less than the others. That will be the best denomination to keep for consecutive sequential serial number. Larger denomination are usually produced much lesser as the demand for them in circulation is limited. A word of advice, modern large denomination do not carry very much premium and they are more expensive (face value) to keep. Go for a smaller denomination but with low production mintage. That will help you to sell at a higher premium. Modern banknotes will take a much longer time to sell them at a significant lowpremium or no premium since most collectors are aware of what to keep.

Fancy Numbers Sequential Sets

-------------------------------------

There are also a large number of collectors who keep sequential number but usually they have one nice fancy numbers inside the consecutive serial number set. For example 55555551, 55555552....55555555, 55555558, 55555559. This kind of sequential numbers set are more interesting and have much more value in term of demand and popularity. If you are keep normal sequential numbers, they are usually slightly valued above it's face value ( if there is any ) . In modern banknotes, they are only valued at face value. It all depend on the market demand and supply. Here is a set of solid number which I previously acquired. All the pieces were sold off except for the solid number 5555555 which is retained for my collection. You can say that I bought the whole set just to keep one piece for my collection. It may sound a bit crazy but that's what specialist collector does.

What other factors to consider

-----------------------------------

Most of the time, it is the financial factor that determine what to acquire in the case of sequential serial number set. Timing is also an important factor. You may be offered a rather good deal on a set of notes. Be careful if the deal is just unbelievably cheap. It will take experiences to verify the notes for their genuinity and condition. Is it in original condition. That lead to grading of the banknotes. This is an important aspect in banknotes. The value of banknotes are largely dependant on it's grade. Just like coins grading. Beside grading and genunity of the banknotes, if you are into world banknotes, you should know something about it's historical background of the banknotes. Production ?, Year, Mintage ? Any particular story behind the banknotes. What are the normally available ones in the market. Varieties. Any special news about them etc.

Finally, the power of market and banknote knowledge affects one's decision making on investment banknote acquisition.

Good Luck in your acquisiiton.
