Celtic, Roman, Merovingian, Carolingian, Feudal, and French jetons present challenges for any collector, but my interests are expanding to the colonial period as it relates to French numismatics (jetons struck for Canada, early American medals designed and struck in France, etc.). My first venture into the topic is a French Collots. They were struck in 1767 in Paris, approximately 90% were countermarked RF for use in the French colonies in the Carribbean. The coins were used in Louisiana and circulated alongside large cents in the East. Breen discusses the coins in his encyclopedia (Breen 701).

The coin is thick and heavy (12 grams). An impressive piece in hand.
